Fluid Mechanics Lab 1 Calibration of A Bourdon Guage: Ojective

The document describes an experiment to calibrate a Bourdon gauge by comparing gauge readings to calculated true pressures. Various masses were placed on a piston, recording the resulting force, pressure, and gauge readings in tables. The gauge readings were compared to calculated true pressures and percent errors were determined. In general, the gauge read slightly low compared to true pressures, with errors of up to 15%. A graph shows gauge pressures tracking but not perfectly matching the true pressures.

LAB 1 CALIBRATION OF A BOURDON GUAGE

Ojective:
To check the calibration of a bourdon guage by comparing the calculated pressure also
known as the true pressure against the guage reading.

Theory:
Pressure is defined as force/area

P=F/A

where:

P=pressure, SI unit N/m2 or Pa

F=force=load=weight=mg SI unit N

A=area, SI unit m2

EQUIPMENT:

Illustration 1: Bourdan Gauge Illustration 2: piston

Illustration 3: mass set

Procedure:

Firstly my team and I set up the apparatus in illustration 1 we did this by filling the
piston with water up to the level marked then placed the piston on top
secondly we checked the mass of the piston which was recorded at 1kg
we then placed the 1kg dead weight into the holder and checked the gauge reading
which was recorded at 30kn/m2 After this was done we proceed by placing 0.5kg
masses on the platform and noted the gauge readings into the table we continued
this process until we reached a total mass of 6kg and the table was full once this was
completed the whole procedure was reversed by now removing the 0.5kg masses and
then noting the gauge pressures into the table finally we calculated the true
pressures for each reading and noted the area of the platform which was 3.15x10 -4

RESULTS:
