The Problem and Its Background

On 2012 when I was invited as a guest panel for a thesis presentation at Lyceum
of the Philippines University I was surprised to see that thesis panel was composed
mainly of non I.T related professionals and the head panel was a social science major.
This got me intrigued and asked my friend a faculty of the college of computer science
about this. Her answer astonishes me and gave me a nerve rack. She said “We believe
that if we could have our students explaining Information Technology concept to non
Information Technology people then we would have a market ready students. For their
thesis should be based on our standard and should be their crowning achievement as a
college student”

Research paper such as thesis, feasibility study, market plan, term paper and alike
are culminating activities done by every students and for the most of us who have went
through the rite of passage in our bachelors degree it is our crowning piece, our capstone,
our most culminating jewel one of which we will always take pride for the merit it has
presented.
Research subject at PATTS College of Aeronautics is usually thought on a defined
time scale, predefined pedagogy and often isolated at other discipline and with no
standard or lack of standard for Undergraduate Research leads to a lot problem. Paper
usually end up in chaos with students cramming over deadline, project relevance not
aligned with institutional objectives, knowledge gap between students and professor and
an emphasis on the objectives of the paper. This lets to students seeing this activity as
merely a requirement and not as their capstone, their crown jewel in their college life one
of which that they should take pride on finishing their thesis.

The purpose of this proposal is to determine the need of creating an Undergraduate


Research Policy that would help the college design an institutional guidelines and
parameters in evaluating undergraduate research output as well as the methods in
handling this subject. An Undergraduate Research policy ensures academic excellence at
the same time helps students to be molded to the image the institution wants. By creating
an Undergraduate Research policy we would be able to enrich their knowledge, inculcate
all discipline and transform our student to critical thinker making them market ready and
globally competitive.

In this age of advent development, we must take on the task of challenging our students
taking the risk on challenging conventional wisdom that has impede our progress and has
blinded our philosophical views for so long,. The nature of research is the perfect avenue
to change the conventional wisdom not only to our students but to one self.
STATEMENT ON THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

The nature of this research is to developed an Undergraduate research Policy that would
help the college developed an institutional parameters in evaluating a research output .
Specifically the research intends to

1. What are the existing guidelines and policy adhere by the College in terms of
a. Documentation format
b. Guidelines on Thesis Advisory
c. Guidelines on Title Defense
d. Grading parameters on the Title Defense
2. What is the level of PATTS College of Aeronautics instructors in handling research
subject in terms of?
a. Knowledge Competency on the foundation of research
b. Readiness in handling the subject
3. What scaling rubric, procedure and policy are being used by the instructor on assessing
the work of the student in terms of?
a. Group Collaboration
b. Research Objectives and Content
c. Time management
4. What is the relevancy of research output by means of
a. Clinical practice of course
b. Institutional mission and Vision

5. What are the existing guidelines and policy conducted during the final defense in
terms of
a. Final defense procedure (Oral defense and Paper merit)
b. Selection of Panel during the final defense
c. Grading Parameters during final defense
