Infinity and not defined are mathematical terms that are often confused and used interchangeably by students. While infinity represents the result of a mathematical expression approaching an endless value, not defined refers to when an expression has no meaningful result, such as tan 90° which is undefined since it results in division by zero. Proper understanding of when each term applies is important for students.

Infinity and Not Defined: Misconceptions and

Interpretation
Supriya Aggarwal

The two terms infinity and not defined are generally used interchangeably in the field of mathematics. Often the students are
in dilemma when to represent the result of any mathematical expression as infinity, and when as non-defined; for eg. tan 90◦
is 10 , which is sometimes referred as infinite (∞) and as not defined otherwise.
