Completing the Square

Consider the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0

Note: If a ≠ 1, we need to factor out a from the equation and since we the equation is set equal to

zero, we can divide a out.

Note: If the equation is not set equal to zero we can still complete the process. Why is that?

Ex 1) x2 + 4x + 8 = 9 Ex 2) x2 + 8x + 13= -2
What can we determine by completing the square?

Factoring

Different ways of factoring the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c

The X-box Method: In this method we must find the

numbers that when multiplied together give us a*c and when

added together give us b.

Note: The equation must equal zero before we can factor.

The Box Method: This method uses the same technique as

in the X-Box method, but instead uses a box instead.

The AC Method: In this method, we consider

quadratic equations that do not have a leading

coefficient of 1. As the picture shows, we do an

illegal algebraic move, however, we negate

that move once we factor out one of the leading coefficients from the factors. Since the equation

is set equal to zero, we can divide by zero and so the factored-out integer is divided out.
Common Factoring Formulas

Ex 3) x2 +4x -5 = 0 Ex 4) x2 -9x +18 = 0

Ex 5) 3x2 – 5x + 8 = 0 Ex 6) x2 – 36 = 0

Ex 7) x2 +6x + 9 =0

What happens when we can’t factor using these methods?

Quadratic Formula

The quadratic formula is used to find the roots of a quadratic equation. The quadratic formula is

the only way to obtain the roots of a quadratic equation that is not factorable. The quadratic

equation also considers quadratic equations that have imaginary numbers as answers.

Recall: i =√-1 is the term we use for imaginary numbers

Remember: The quadratic equation must be set equal to zero and a ≠ 0

Ex 8) x2 + 5x + 3 = 0 Ex 9) 4x2 + 13x + 19 = 0

Ex 10) -5x2 – 8x + 13 = 0
Word Problems

1. The sum of two numbers are 23 and the product of the two numbers is 126. What are the two

numbers?

2. We are trying to build an enclosure to maximize our area. If we have 80 feet of fence, what

dimensions must we make the enclosure to maximize the area?
