Annotated Outline

This document provides an annotated outline for a research paper on music therapy in Singapore. It begins with an introduction on what music therapy is and how it is used to treat various conditions. The outline then discusses the background context of music therapy locally and trends in its integration in schools. The body of the paper focuses on whether the Singapore government is doing enough to support music therapy and identifies its potential benefits to society. Sources are provided that discuss music therapy's effectiveness in early childhood education and its social benefits. Suggestions are made for greater governmental initiatives and investments to make music therapy more relevant in Singapore.

Annotated Outline for Research Paper

Ong Yong Xin, Seanne

22 October 2018

1. Introduction

a. Introduction

i. What is music therapy? A form of therapy by music therapists (accredited)

to help treat patients, notably autism, depression, anxiety and also ADHD

with the therapeutic use of music. There are many different spectrums in

which music therapy runs into, ranging from trivial to prescribed use of

music to restore, maintain, and improve health.

b. Background Context

i. Music therapy in local context - increasing relevance, however it is not

adequately expressed in it

ii. General trends -

1. There has been attempts made to integrate fragments of MT in the

school syllabus (especially amongst Childcares and Kindergarten) in

recent years since ECDA has been founded.

2. Wide array of benefits has been identified in recent years yet funding is

still lacking. While attempts to incorporate MT practices in the

education of early childhood sector, study findings and availability of

examples is still considered far from significant.

2. Body

a. The problem - Should MT be more widely integrated into our society (referring to

SG context)? Is the government doing enough for MT to grow and develop in

Singapore?

i. Singapore government is not channelling enough resource in MT, therefore

such areas of therapy has yet been unveiled..

ii. Its growth potential has not been recognised by local government for any

economic investments to be channelled. Asian society of "kiasi" and the fear

of losing "Kiasu"

iii. Domestic population and affordability of treatment might be a concern in

Singapore. Local Market is very small, and since MT has such a specific

target purpose, it might not garner sufficient support to even sow its roots in

Singapore over time. Furthermore, the cost of treatment is not necessarily

feasible to average Singaporeans.

Randi R. & Brynjulf S. (2013) Concepts of Context in Music Therapy. The Grieg Academy --

Department of Music, University of Bergen, Norway.

This source discusses the issues related to context of music therapy, surroundings of music

therapy practices. They went on further to explore the context awareness in music therapy,

providing a conceptualised understanding of what music therapy encompasses. Thereafter,

they also discussed the implications for practice, research, and theory development in music

therapy. This source serves to provide a comprehensive coverage of what music therapy is,

and it will be helpful in shaping the meaning of music therapy and its context in this study.
b. Why music therapy is important?

i. Importance of MT in society

 Research institute and has great medical relevance, has a great

potential

 Reap economic benefit; it is an invested and calculated risk that can be

taken

 Keep relevance in the rapidly changing world --> many other societies

and countries adopting MT as a treatment option, and has shown

effectiveness significantly

ii. How music therapy can benefit society

 With the increasing rates of autistic incidents, it could help alleviate

effects of these statistics

 Improve mental state of Singaporeans

 Could be a potential non-invasive treatment option to patients with

cancer

iii. Reiterate increasing amount of special kids emerging in society

Performance of Preschoolers in Singapore. International Journal of Learning &

Development. (5)1. doi:10.5296/ijld.v5i1.7039

Boon and Kok discussed about the effectiveness of music intervention into early childhood

curriculum in Singapore. They hypothesized that by doing so, it could facilitate the

development of word recognition abilities in preschool which may eventually reduce reading

difficulties when children enter primary school. It explores the potential ways in which music

can contribute to the learning, and positive results has been demonstrated later in the study

with significantly higher post-test means than group without intervention. This source will be

contributing to the validity and the effectiveness of music-based intervention in non-medical

ways, in local context.

Lin, Y. (2014) Understanding the benefits of an Asian music therapy student peer group. The

Journal of the Australian Music Therapy Association Inc. Volume 10, (p.32-40)

The study serves to understand the benefits of music therapy on student peer group in various

domains. Themes identified around how music therapy has improved social connections, in

particular in-depth cultural understanding and greatly improved social bonding among

members, and created a sense of belongingness which in turn helped strengthened the social

support system in the group. This will be used as an research study that stands up for the

significance of Music therapy in Asian social context.

c. Suggestions - How MT can be made more relevant?

i. Governmental initiatives

 What government needs to understand

 There is a lot about MT that needs to be unveiled, it is a research

field that could bring about breaking grounds in research

 The need to be more open-minded for change to be seen

 The need to be risk-takers

 Adapt?

3. Conclusion

a. Call to action

i. Economic: Could investments made in the MT and funds channelled be

considered as a form of calculated risk that could bring about revolutionary

improvements in our medical researches?

ii. Social: Could this also be a reflection of government attitude in society?

Could we be more open minded?
