Linear and Non-Linear Relations Syllabus

This syllabus document outlines the learning goals and activities for a 9th year level mathematics unit on linear and non-linear relationships. Students will learn to plot points, draw graphs, find intercepts and gradients, calculate equations of straight lines, and recognize different types of linear relationships. They will also be introduced to non-linear relationships through basic parabolic graphs. Assessment will include tests, workbooks, open-ended problems and check points to evaluate students' understanding of linear and non-linear equations and graphing skills.

Linear & Non Linear Relationships

In linear relationships, any given change in an independent variable will always produce a
 And review of plotting points and drawing graphs (Cartesian Plane – x and y position)
corresponding change in the dependent variable.
 To find the x- and y-intercepts

 To use the gradient–intercept method plus y = mx + c method

 To calculate the equation of a straight line

 To recognise the Positive, Negative, Zero and Undefined linear lines

 To calculate the Gradient

A nonlinear relationship is a type of relationship between two entities in which change in one  How Non Linear Relationships are produced. (Basic parabolic graph is found with the
entity does not correspond with constant change in the other entity. This might mean the equation: y = x2 )
relationship between the two entities seems unpredictable or virtually absent
Big Questions / Inquiry Questions

ILP Statement
Students will begin to investigate Linear Relations and sketch linear graphs using the coordinates of two points and the equation y = m x+c. They will identify the distance between two points
on a Cartesian plane to find the midpoint and gradient.

Vocabulary Development:

Circle Ellipse Many-one functions Subject Negative/positive
Parabola Linear Functions Backtracking Point of interception
Hyperbola Quadratic functions Sketch graph Substitution
Independent variable Cubic functions y-intercept Elimination

I am learning… (Dot points) I know I learnt it because…

Ordered pairs and plotting points Can plot at least two ordered pairs and join them
 Skills work in Essential Assessment to form a straight line.
 Drawing on A3 papers
Sketching graphs using x- and y- Able to sketch a graph joining the two intercepts
 Using large paper and markers to sketch large Cartesian Planes
intercepts and label.
 Group work difficult problems (y=2x + 3/2) With halves and dividing)
Special lines: lines with one intercept  Peer assisted equation calculating Able to sketch a line graph with one intercept.
 Balancing difficult equations in groups of 2/3 (line intersects x or y axis)

Gradient–intercept method and y = Can calculate +ve , –ve gradients or undefined

mx + c from linear graphs.

Finding the equation of a straight line Able to create family of graphs for different y-
intercepts and same gradient or different
Linear modelling gradients and same y-intercepts
Able to determine the point of intersection of two
Graphical solutions of linear lines we can use an accurate graph and determine
simultaneous equations its coordinate (x, y).

Rates, gradients and Travel graphs Rate is a measure of change and is calculated in
same way as gradient.

Non Linear Relationships - basic A parabola can be sketched using its key features,
parabolic graph is produced by the such as its general shape, its axis of symmetry and
equation: y = x2 its turning point or vertex. A parabola can be seen
to undergo transformations by making changes to
the equation y = x2.
