Magnet Wire Product Identification Numbering

ANSI/NEMA MW 1000, Magnet Wire, provides a standard magnet wire product

identification numbering (PIN) system that is used in the industry for ordering magnet
wire products. The following are examples of the use of this system:

Product Description PIN

18 AWG Round Single Build MW 80-C red with paraffin wax lubrication: MW080CSx000018Prd
6 AWG Square Heavy Build MW 36-C natural with oil lubrication: MW036CHx162162Onc

In order to avoid potential errors in the ordering of magnet wire products, use of slash
sheet numbers from the former J-W-1177 series of Federal Specifications should be
avoided. Effective October 16, 1996, Federal J-W-1177 specifications were cancelled,
with NEMA MW 1000 designated as their replacement.
