Doepke Residual Current Circuit Breakers

Doepke RCCBs meet EN61008 / EN62423

To reduce the risk of death or serious injury from electrocution and or fire, RCCBs are provided in AC circuits as an
additional means of protection and must operate reliably when other means of protection have failed.

Doepke RCCBs are manufactured in Doepke factories based in Germany, with individual testing and recording of the
trip characteristic and a unique serial number marked on each product. This ensures that every product leaves the
factory in safe working order and conforms to the requirements of the relevant standard or standards.

RCCB's General Principles for Use

by “skilled/instructed” (electrical) persons only. Refer to the IET Wiring Regulations for
guidance on the selection and use of RCCBs to meet the requirements for new and existing installations.
The references below are based on BS 7671: 2008 incorporating Amendment No 3: 2015.

Doepke RCCBs manufactured to the above standard are designed to protect persons against the hazards associated
with indirect contact where exposed conductive parts of the installation are connected to a suitable earth electrode
- see Regulation 411.

Doepke RCCBs with a trip rating not exceeding 30 mA, meet the requirements of Regulation 415 based on the
supplementary bonding requirements. Using RCCBs as an additional means of protection does not negate the use
of basic protection methods required under regulation 411.

Doepke RCCBs with a trip rating not exceeding 300 mA meet the requirements of Regulation 532, however within
the Regulations there are specific requirements where 300mA trip rating may not be appropriate - for example
overhead heating see clause 422.3.9

Types of RCCB required by the IET Wiring Regulations

In addition to standard RCCBs (Type AC) Doepke manufacture a wide range of devices with specific functions for
different applications.

Please contact us if you require a product that is not listed in our standard documentation.

used in applications where RCCBs have to be connected in series to achieve discrimination (Fig. 1) between
upstream and downstream devices - see clause 5.31.2.9 and example application 740.411, or 534.2.6 ( Doepke Type
S RCCBs are designed to have immunity to transient wave forms <5kA 8/20µs)

used in applications with residual sinusoidal alternating currents and pulsating direct currents with a
maximum of 6 mA smooth DC. - see clause 710.411.3.2 and 722.531.2.101

(IEC 62423) used in applications where in addition

to the above, smooth DC residual currents above 6mA are
present under certain fault conditions - see clause
712.411.3.2.1.2 and 722.531.2.101

used in applications where the RCCB could be

subject to in rush currents < 3000 A , which would cause
tripping of standard RCCB - see clause 534.2.6

used in applications where the RCCB is subjected

to mixed frequency leakage currents, such as single phase
inverter controlled washing machines, mixers or power
tools.

used in electrical vehicle charging applications

where the RCCB must trip if the smooth DC leakage current
exceeds 6mA.

SELECTION & APPLICATION
Operating and Installation Instructions for Residual Current Circuit Breakers DFS2, DFS4

Any position. By clipping onto DIN EN 50022 rails.

Take all phase conductors and the neutral conductor (N) through the switch. The direction of the flow of energy can
be either way, i.e. the mains or the load can be connected to the upper or lower row of terminals. To ensure that the
built-in testing system operates properly
when 4-pole RCCBs are used in 2-pole
applications, use the terminals as per
wiring diagram. Aluminium conductors
must be scraped and greased just
before they are connected up to the
terminals.

Testing of the entire protective system

when putting into operation must be
performed according to the
specifications of the valid national
installation regulations. Test quarterly by
pressing the test button T for stationary
equipment and once every working day
for mobile equipment.

Please note that the above fuses provide no overload protection. At the design stage check that the downstream
overload protection does not exceed the total rated current of the RCCB.

Doepke RCCBs are calibrated for operation between +40°C to -5°C. For operation down to -25°C the maximum values
of earth fault loop impedance defined in Table 41.5 must be reduced by 20 %.

DFS2 (230V 50Hz) and DFS4 (400V 50Hz) Test circuits will operate down to approximately 50% of the nominal
voltage. For operation on a 110V supply order a 110V unit.

DFS2 and DFS4 are calibrated to operate on 50 Hz supplies, for any other frequency order a special Doepke RCCB
calibrated for the nominal supply frequency.

Doepke residual current circuit breakers have been carefully tested at several stages of production and have left the
factory in perfect condition with regard to safety. To ensure safe operation, please observe the following instructions
and warnings.

1. Installation may only be performed by an authorized electrician, who is acquainted with the relevant
national installation regulations.
2. Residual current circuit breakers without additional protective housings may be stored and operated in
dry, low dust areas only. Corrosive atmospheres must also be avoided.
3. Users must be reminded, that all devices should be periodically tested, using the test button T.
4. Trips caused by leakage current due to surge voltage cannot be completely ruled out even with surge
current proof RCCBs. In cases where an interruption in power supply could constitute a hazard to
persons or animals or cause serious damage to property, the earth leakage system should comprise
selective RCCBs with increased surge current strength and over voltage protection. In special cases the
system should be monitored with an auxiliary contact on the RCCBs and a suitable signaling device.
5. If the device is opened the warranty becomes void!

B
circuits feeding loads which can
generate AC & DC leakage currents

Many electrical installations now contain products which

incorporate power electronics, such as inverters for PV
installations, speed control in HVAC, some running machines,
UPS, medical equipment etc. This type of equipment can
produce, in addition to standard 50Hz earth leakage currents,
pure DC and high frequency AC leakage currents which would
not be detected by a standard AC or A type RCCB.

‘B’ type RCCBs in addition to normal AC, can detect high

frequency AC and pure DC earth leakage currents.

Reducing the risk of fire and/or electrocution through automatic

disconnection of the electrical supply (Reg 411), relies on the
selection and installation of the correct type of RCCB.

The IEE Wiring Regs. make specific reference to ‘B’ type RCCBs

Doepke RCCBs - Practical Applications Guide

Checklist - General Limits of Operation for RCDs / RCCBs

Understanding the different types of RCCB and the characteristics that may be
specified by equipment manufacturers, reduces the risk of installing inappropriate and
unsafe protection. In addition it also helps during risk assessment for existing
installations, to identify potential dangerous situations and installations.

Equipment Requiring Special Types of RCD / RCCB

The table below gives some generic examples based on the installed technology used
and the associated RCCB. It is imperative that the Equipment Manufacturer’s
Installation Instructions are checked, with regard to advice relating to the minimum
sensitivity and the Type of RCCB that can be used safely with their equipment.
