CVEN 2200 Surveying Exam #2 Fall 2017

This document is an exam for a surveying course. It contains 4 parts testing students' skills in solving surveying problems involving areas, horizontal curves, coordinate geometry, and intersections of circles. The exam provides space for students to show their work and calculations to arrive at numeric answers for problems involving curved boundaries, chord distances, deflection angles, coordinate calculations, central angles, middle ordinates, and intersection points of circles.

Part I: Small problems (20 points)

1. (4 point) Determine the following area with a curved boundary from 0+00 to 1+30 ______________

2. (6 points) A horizontal curve’s central angle is 8o11’’, and the station of PI is 64+27.46. The radius of the
curve equals 2864.8 ft. Determine the chord distance for stationing 64+00 (measured from PC)
_____________, and determine the deflection angle for stationing 64+00 (measured from PC)
_____________.

3. (10 points) Write down a procedure using the division method to find out the area of the
following land parcel. Number your steps by 1, 2, 3, etc. Use appropriate symbols to indicate the
lengths or angles to be measured (mark them in the following graph) and calculate the area based
on your symbols.

Part II: Major problems (80 points)

1. (20 points) From the adjusted Latitudes and Departures below, calculate the North and East
coordinates for vertices of a closed traverse using assumed coordinates for Point A of North:
1000.00 (ft) and East: 5000.00 (ft). Fill in the table below.

LINE Adj. Lat Adj. Dep Point North East

A 1000.00 5000.00

B
BC -109.0434 +59.8338
C
CD -25.2360 -325.2279
D

2. (15 points) A horizontal curve has PC at station 123+70 and PI at station 130+90. The degree of
curvature (arc definition) (Da) equals 2.80.
(a) Determine the central angle.
(b) Determine the station of PT.
(c) Determine the middle ordinate.

3. (20 points) A highway horizontal curve has T =120 ft, R = 1000 ft, and PI station = 87 + 50. If the
coordinates of PI is (3500, 5700) and AZAV = 70o00’00’’ (A represents PC and V represents PI).
Determine the coordinates of PC and PT.

6
4. (25 points) A circle of radius 853.34 ft (centered at point A) intersects another circle of radius 1389.54 ft
(centered at Point B). The intersection point is Point P. The X and Y coordinates (in ft) of Point A are 2058.74
and 4311.32, and those of Point B (in ft) are 2851.52 and 2344.21. What are the possible coordinates of Point
P?
