Outline of the Course:


Introduction and scope of biostatistics, use of statistics in biology. Population and
sample. Stages of research, types of data and methods of data collection. Data
arrangement and presentation, formation of tables and charts. Measures of central
tendency: computation of mean, median and mode from grouped and ungrouped data.
Measures of dispersion: computation of variance, standard deviation, standard error and
their coefficients. Probability rules. Binomial, poison and normal distributions.
Hypothesis testing: Student ‘t’ test, Chi square test, Analysis of variance. Correlation and
regression. Experimental designing, planning of an experiment, replication and
randomization.

Note: Computer applications are included in the course with each topic where
required.

Objectives:
The course will help the students to analyze data pertaining to their research work
and to assess the significance of their experimental designs. Without statistical analysis
research articles are not accepted for publication by the scientific journals. So students
must have sound knowledge of the statistical programs.

Use of computer and statistical packages for data analysis in life science.
Designing experiments using the understanding of theory course. Questionnaire
development. Conducting surveys and experiments (data collection). Conducting data
organization and analysis. Presentation of data.

Objectives:
Practical application and knowledge is necessity of any academic course. Lab
Biostatistics course is designed to demonstrate the principles studied in theory practically.
Students will be trained on the use of some statistical software packages (MINITAB and
SPSS), experimental design and practically doing experiments and data analysis.
