Diseases of Endocrine System
DIABETES
Diabetes is a number of diseases
that involve problems with the hormone
insulin. Normally, the pancreas (an
organ behind the stomach) releases
insulin to help your body store and use
the sugar and fat from the food you eat.
Diabetes can occur when the pancreas
produces very little or no insulin, or when the body does not respond appropriately to insulin.
As yet, there is no cure. People with diabetes need to manage their disease to stay healthy.
GOITER
A goiter is an enlarged thyroid
gland that causes the neck to swell.
It is one of the most common thyroid
disorders.
Goiters are often harmless but
symptoms can occur, and treatment
may be required depending on the
size and type of goiter.
ACROMEGALY
Acromegaly is a hormonal
disorder that results from too much
growth hormone (GH) in the body. The pituitary, a small gland in the brain, makes GH.
Inacromegaly, the pituitary produces excessive amounts of GH. Usually the excess GH comes
from benign, or noncancerous, tumors on the pituitary.
CUSHING DISEASE
Cushing disease is a condition in which the
pituitary gland releases too much
adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The
pituitary gland is an organ of the endocrine
system.
Cushing disease is a form of Cushing
syndrome. Other forms of Cushing syndrome include exogenous Cushing syndrome, Cushing
syndrome caused by adrenal tumor, and ectopic Cushing syndrome.
HYPOPITUITARISM
Hypopituitarism is a rare disorder in which
your pituitary gland either fails to produce one or
more of its hormones or doesn't produce enough
of them.
The pituitary gland is a small bean-shaped
gland situated at the base of your brain, behind
your nose and between your ears. Despite its size,
this gland secretes hormones that influence nearly every part of your body.
In hypopituitarism, you have a short supply of one or more of these pituitary hormones. This
deficiency can affect any number of your body's routine functions, such as growth, blood
pressure and reproduction.
HYPERTHYROIDISM
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) occurs when your thyroid gland produces too
much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism can accelerate your body's metabolism,
causing unintentional weight loss
and a rapid or irregular heartbeat.
GIGANTISM
Gigantism is a rare condition that causes abnormal growth in children. This change is
most notable in terms of height, but girth is affected as well. It occurs when your
child’s pituitary gland makes too much growth hormone, which is also known as somatotropin.
Early diagnosis is
important. Prompt treatment can
stop or slow the changes that may
cause your child to grow larger
than normal. However, the
condition can be hard for parents
to detect. The symptoms of
gigantism might seem like normal
childhood growth spurts at first.
