MlSS MOODY is in Hollywood to attend the premiere of her latest movie.
She has hired 17 rooms in the hotel at a cost of $40,000 a night.
Unfortunately, since her arrival, there have been a series of disasters.

manager, a near nervous breakdown and played havoc with the normal
running of his hotel.

roses. She hates yellow roses. In fact Miss Moody hates anything yellow.
She has never worn anything yellow in her life.
4. Fire! Fire!
A real disaster! At midnight on Monday there was a fire in the hotel
kitchens. The fire brigade arrived and ordered everyone to leave the
building. However, the hotel staff were too afraid to wake Miss Moody.

TODD CHRISTIAN, the Human Cannonball, has lost his job, because he
is terrified of flying. But it isn’t the enormous cannon that scares him, it’s
aeroplanes! He is quite happy to fly 30 metres above the circus at 80 kph,
but he won't get on a plane.
When Todd, 26, injured his leg during a performance, the circus said he
should go to Brazil for a special training course. But Todd refused to go.
He said, 'I know it sounds crazy, because I’m a human cannonball, but I
don't like long flights. If I’m on a plane for a long time, I start to panic.’
So the circus told him he had to leave his job. Todd said he was very upset.
He is now discussing the situation with his lawyer. He thinks he doesn’t
have to do the course.
Meanwhile, Brazilian Diego Zeiman, the Human Rocket, has arrived at the
circus to lake Todd's job. Senhor Zeman has already done the special
training course. I feel sorry for Todd, but this is my dream job and I’rn
very happy,' said the Human Rocket.
Marnie Dock, who became the world’s first female human cannonball at
the age of 16, is now the circus’s cannon trainer. She thought that Todd

should do the training course. She explained that the circus had to be very
strict, as the human cannonball performance could be very dangerous. ‘We
did it for his own safety,’ she said.

My daughter Evie is living in London now. She went there four months
ago, and I'm really very worried about her. She says she's having a great
time but I just think London's such a dangerous place for a young girl, and
she's still only 18. She shouldn't live so far away from home. Her mother
went with her to help her look for somewhere to live. But I didn't go. I
don't like London - I don't like big cities. Why did she have to go there? I

don't understand. She says she wants to be a dancer, and she's doing a sort
of course, a ballet course or something. But ballet isn't a real job, and you
don't earn much money being a dancer, do you? She's a clever girl. I think
she should go to university.
She's living in a flat in London - with her boyfriend. I think, and I don't
like that at all! We've never met the boyfriend -Michael, I think his name
is. He hasn't got a job and so Evie has to earn some extra money - she
works at the weekends as a dancer in a theatre or club, I think. I just hope
it's a nice place. She phones home sometimes, but not a lot, and we phone
her, but so often her mobile's turned off or she doesn't answer. When I do
manage to talk to her, she just tells us that we should get a mobile so she
can text us. She says we shouldn't worry. How can we not worry? We're
her parents, we miss her and of course we worry, sometimes I can't sleep at
night. She really must come home more often.

I want to be a professional dancer, so I came to London four months ago to
start a course at the English National Ballet School. If you want a good
dance career, you have to go to a good school and you have to start young
- I'm almost 19, nearly too old! I know my parents are worried about me
living in London, but it isn't dangerous. You just have to be careful, that's
all. It was difficult in the beginning. I didn't know anybody, and London's
such a big place. But I love it now. There's lots to do and see.
I'm living in a small flat near the ballet school with Francine, another
dance student. We're good friends now. And I've also got a boyfriend! His
name's Marco and he's doing the same course. He still lives with his
parents, quite close to our flat. His parents are really kind, and I often
spend the evenings with them. I want to take Marco home to meet my
parents. But the train journey is expensive. And I haven't got much money.
London's really expensive, so Francine and I have to work every weekend.
We teach children's dance classes at a school nearby. It's good fun,
actually!

JOBS FOR THE BOYS AND GIRLS
A recent report by the Equal Opportunities Commission, called 'Free to
Choose', says that schools and employers are still recommending some
careers only for boys and others only for girls. The government has to take
action on this, says the EOC.
At school, boys and girls continue to study subjects that are traditional for
their gender, and they continue to get poor careers advice. Employers for
some jobs still choose young people because of their gender, not their

problems with male plumbers from the very beginning.
Jenny says, ‘Some of them have been really horrible. It's been so difficult
to change their negative opinion of me. They are so sure that I can't do
plumbing just because I’m female. One employer told me, “This is a job
for big strong men. We don't want women here.’"

says. ‘A lot of them actually prefer a female plumber!'Jenny loves her job.

found it boring and decided to change careers.
He has always loved children, and now he is a qualified male nanny (or
‘manny'!) to 18-month-old Jack. But he has had some problems. ‘There is
prejudice. A lot of people don't think that a man can look after a child as
well as a woman. Some nanny agencies didn’t want me at all,' he said.
‘Some parents didn’t want a man looking after their children. I had to wait
nearly a year for my first job.’
But does he like his new career? ‘I love it!’ says Alex. ‘Jack was 10 weeks
old when I started looking after him. I don’t think it's strange to feed him
and change his nappy - it's my profession. It's wonderful to be part of his
development. I love playing with him, and teaching him things as well.'

R: Well, certainly a man has never applied for it before. Tell me, have you
always been a nanny?
A: No, not at all. I was studying engineering in Stockholm, and I knew I
could earn a lot of money as an engineer but it was boring, so I stopped
and decided to look at other careers.
R: OK I understand that. But why a nanny? Why did you choose this
career, a career in childcare?
A: Well, obviously it’s because I love children, but it’s much more than
that. You see my mother died when I was just twelve years old and I had
to help my father take care of my younger brother and sister.
R: Ah, I see. So you didn’t have to do a lot of training to be a nanny?
A: Oh yes, I did. 1 had to train for a year. I had to learn how to look after
children properly. Actually, I was the only boy on the course - so I really
enjoyed it!
R: So what kind of things did you learn?
A: Well, you know, how to change nappies ...

I'm getting on the plane at Heathrow Airport when I realize that I don't
want to make this journey. I already feel tired just thinking about it, but if I
don't go now. I'll waste over £1,000 on my round-the-world ticket - so I
get on the plane.
5,500 miles and eight time zones later, I get off the plane in L.A. It is late
afternoon, but my body clock is telling me that it is 5 a.m. When I get to
the hotel, all I'll want to eat is toast and jam, not dinner. But if 1 don't eat
now, I’ll feel hungry in the middle of the L.A. night.
Next morning I wake up, and try to eat breakfast. Then I go on a quick tour
of Hollywood, before I catch my next plane. Another 5,500 miles later,
and another four time zones later, I get off the plane in Fiji. I am
exhausted, but this is paradise. When I have a proper holiday next year, I'll
come back here. I go to the hotel and lie under a palm tree. But all too
soon. I'm back at the airport.
Then I'm flying home, still wishing I was back in Bali. As soon as I get
home, I know I'll start feeling bored!

My name is Ben. I am 32 years old and I am a travel addict. I've been back
home now for almost six months, but I know that I will always be an
addict. If I see just one travel brochure. I know I will want to go away
again.
It was without doubt the best year of our lives. No work, no boss, no
worries. No grey skies of Britain, just carefree months going into the
distance. True, there wasn't much money, but it didn't matter. We loved
having the freedom to go where we wanted, when we wanted. If we liked a
place, we stayed. If not, we just got the next bus out. We only had one
worry in the world. We knew we had to return to Britain.
Coming back was awful. We had huge debts, and we had to find work.
The routine of getting up, going to work, going home, eating, sleeping, and
getting up again is just about killing me. I'm finding it difficult to do what
other people tell me to do.

The history of paper
Today, paper is used for hundreds of everyday things - books and
newspapers, of course, but also money, stamps, cups, bags, and even some
clothes. Long ago, before paper, people wrote on animal skins, bones and
stones. Then in 2700 BC, the Egyptians started to make papyrus, which
was similar to paper. But the first real paper was invented in AD 105 by a
Chinese government official, Ts'ai Lun. It was made from a mixture of
plants and cloth. The Chinese kept their invention secret for centuries.
Finally, in the 10th century, paper was brought to Europe by the Arabs.
The first European paper mill was built in Spain in 1150. Since the 18th
century, most paper is made out of wood, because it is much stronger than
cloth. Nowadays, each person uses about 300 kg of paper every year.
That's a lot of paper!

The discovery of DNA
Did you know that a tiny piece of your hair gives us information about... ?
— who you are related to
— which career you could be successful in
— any crimes you have committed
— what illnesses you could get
— how and when you could die
This is possible thanks to the information in DNA (or deoxyribonucleic
acid). Your hair and eveiy cell in your body contains your own unique
DNA. It can tell you a lot about your family, health, and personality.
DNA was discovered by a German scientist, Friedrich Miescher, in 1869,
but nobody realized its importance then. Other scientists thought that it
was too simple to contain the map of how we are made! In 1953, a group
of British scientists at Cambridge University finally discovered the
structure of DNA and how it worked. They were given the Nobel Prize for
Medicine in 1962.
In 1990 the Human Genome Project was begun. Scientists wanted to make
a map of the 3 billion chemical letters in human DNA. Over 1,000
scientists all over the world worked on the project, and it took 10 years.
With this information, it is possible that a cure for many diseases will be
found in the future. But it also brings with it many questions. Do we want
to be able to choose what our babies will look like, or pick the best person
for a job with DNA tests?

The invention of Google
How many common English words were invented by Shakespeare?
How long did it take people to find the answer to this question 15 years
ago? And now? You can google it and find the answer immediately!
Internet search engines at the time were slow and gave many websites that
weren’t useful. In January 1996, Page and Brin decided to make a better
and faster search engine. They thought the results should be based on the
popularity of each website - the most popular ones have the highest
number of ‘weblinks’ (links to other websites).
Nobody would give them money for their project, so they used their credit
cards and bought as much computer memory as possible. They also
borrowed money from family and friends. Then, in 1998, they were given
a cheque for $100,000, and they started their own company. Their first
office was in a friend’s garage! The company name Google comes from
mathematics. A ‘googoF is a very high number - 1 followed by a hundred
zeros.

Freeplay -the world’s first clockwork radio
The clockwork radio is the only radio that doesn’t need batteries or
electricity. It is powered by turning the handle for a minute. Nowadays,
thousands of these radios are made everyday. They are bought by people
in Third World countries where there isn’t any electricity.
But no one would help Trevor develop his idea for a new kind of radio.
Finally, in 1993, his invention was shown on a TV programme, and
afterwards, a South African businessman heard of Trevor's clever idea and
contacted him. The first Freeplay radios were built in South Africa in
1995.
Since then, the radios have been a great success. Millions of them have
been sold worldwide, and Trevor have been given many awards, including
one from Nelson Mandela. Trevor has hung a letter on the wall in his
house. It was written in 1991 by another engineer who explained in great
detail why he thought Trevor’s idea for a clockwork radio couldn't
possibly work!

When Alicia Hempleman-Adams was eight years old, she became the
youngest person to travel to the North Pole. But that was on a plane when
she visited her father, the British explorer David Hempleman-Adams. Now
the 15-year-old has decided to follow in her dad’s frozen footsteps. Next
month, Alicia is going to set off on a journey to the Artie that could put her
in the record books, as the youngest person to walk to the North Pole.
She has been training hard for the journey. She has been walking a lot with
a heavy backpack, and she has also been practising pulling a sled long
distances. ‘It’s going to be pretty cold,’ she said. ‘It’s -20°C at the
moment, and it might get to -30°C. But I think we’re prepared.’
Alicia’s mother is also trying to stay calm about the trip. She thinks that
Alicia is too young to make the journey. Mr Hempleman-Adams said,‘My
wife has always thought I’m silly to be an explorer.’ And when his 90-
year-old grandmother heard of the latest plan, she shouted, ‘Oh, no, not
again!’
He said,‘If Alicia doesn’t finish, it’s not a problem. She’s got the rest of
her life to do it. You’ve got to enjoy it.There’s no other reason for doing
adventure.’
