Definitions of ESP
We
can count as many definitions as numbers of linguists who had defined it.
Hacherson and Waters have defined ESP as an approach rather than product meaning that
ESP does not necessarily involve any particular kind of language teaching materials or
methodology. The fundamental function is why does this learner needs to learn English?
Hacherson and Waters state that ESP is an approach in which all decision ( content and
methods) based on the learners' needs.
The Origin of ESP: According to Tom Hacherson and Allen Waters there are 3 reasons of
ESP.
1- The Demands of Brave New World:
Expansion of science and technology …. Etc.
New generation of learners.
Time is money created a need for coast effective course with clearly defined goals.
2- Revolution of Linguistics: were as traditional linguistics set out to describe the features of
language , revolutionary linguists begin to focus on which language is used in real
communication .
3- The Focus on the Learners: it has less to do with linguistics and more to do with
psychology; rather than focus on the method of language more attention was giving to the
way in which learners acquires the language skills, attitude, strategies.
ESP vs EGP

2- ESP focuses on the learners and their needs but EGP focuses on the language
itself.
