ETHP (Evacuated Tube Heat Pipe Collectors) -
The evacuated tube heat pipe solar thermal collector is a high efficiency solar
thermal collection device used primarily for heat collection when the required
fluid temp. is above 80°C & the ambient temp. is very low (below 10°C).

It is ideal in situations where the low ambient temperature will cause the flat plate
collector & the evacuated glass tubes to crack. Since the heat transfer takes place
inside the tip, fluid in the heat pipe never comes in contact with the heating fluid.
The glass tube made of toughened borosilicate & can withstand hailstones of dia. 2”
falling directly on them. The greatest advantage is that they can collect direct as well
as diffused radiation, making them the ideal choice for those hot yet cloudy days.

Flat Plate Collectors -
When solar radiation passes through a transparent cover such as glass and
impinges on the blackened absorber surface of high absorptivity, a large portion
of this energy is absorbed by plate and transferred to the transport medium in
the fluid tubes, to be carried away for storage or use. The underside of the absorber
plate and the two sides are well insulated to reduce conduction losses. The liquid
tubes are welded to the absorbing plate and are connected at both ends by large
diameter header tubes. The water enters from the bottom header, rises up the
riser tubes as it heats, and passes through the upper header into the tank.

Parabolic Dish Collectors -
The key concept in Parabolic Dish Collectors is the use of mirrors or other
reflective surfaces to concentrate the sun rays hitting a large area onto a tube or
container full of a fluid which is heated. This increases the temperature of the
fluid to some 400°C. The heat transfer fluid is then used to heat steam in a
standard turbine generator. The process is economical and, for heating the pipe,
thermal efficiency ranges from 60-80%.
