This document outlines a lesson plan on ratios for a 6th grade math class. The lesson objectives are for students to understand the difference between ratios and fractions, and to demonstrate representing ratios pictorially. The plan includes introducing ratios by reviewing fractions. Students will watch a video explaining ratios and participate in ratio activities using shapes and candy. They will be assessed through anecdotal notes during small group work, where they will practice identifying and representing ratios using different methods.

Title/Focus

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

Grade 6 Math Number Sense
 GLO – Develop number sense.
o SLO – 5. Demonstrate an understanding of ratio, concretely, pictorially, and
symbolically.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1) Compare and contrast the difference between a ratio and a fraction. (understanding)

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

 Math Antics Ratio YouTube Video
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Ask students to get out their math journals.
 Review what a fraction represents – A fraction represents a piece of a
whole.
 Review converting fractions into decimals 2/3 - 0.6666… , ¾ - 0.75
 Review how to reduce a fraction into lowest terms 16/64 - 1/4 5 min
o Explore the definition of Ratios A relationship between two
numbers using division.
o Ratio compares part to part and a fraction compares part to
whole.
Body Time
Math Antics  Watch Math Antics video
Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ2nYUBVvqI
 Tell students these things to keep in mind while
watching the video.
o How are fractions and ratios different?
Ratio comparing part to part, Fraction
20 min
part to whole.
o How can ratios be represented? 1/2 , 1 to
2, 1 per 2
 Demonstrate ratio on the board with students.

 Demonstrate ratios using smarties as a class.

o I will demonstrate a ratio of blue smarties to
red smarties
o Then red smarties to all smarties
o Green smarties to purple smarties
o I will do this using the projector screen on
the smart board.

Math Stations  Put math groups on board and ask students to go to

Monday their group quietly, ask for the noise level to be kept
Schedule at a 2.
 Pink group will be at meet the teacher.
Questions for Meet the teacher
o Start with reviewing how to put fractions
into lowest terms. Use
1. 6/8 - 3/4
2. 9/3 – 3/1
3. 16/64 – 1/4
 Use the smarties to create ratios and have them
write what the ratio would be for:
20 min
1. Blue smarties to all smarties
2. Yellow smarties to blue smarties
3. Purple smarties to red smarties
4. Green smarties to all
 Do ratios by drawing shapes with students
1. Draw 4 squares and 5 circles.
2. Have students do squares to circles
3. Circles to all

Conclusion Time
 Check for understanding, ask student what a ratio is representing. 5 min
Assessment
 Gage student in math group at meet the teacher’s understand of the concept
introduced, things that they are confused about readdress on Thursdays Math class.

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time

 We will be doing Wednesday/Thursday schedule.

 Ask students to get their math books quickly and quietly.
 Ask students to grab a whiteboard and a whiteboard marker.
 Review ratios concept.
 Ask students to write their answers to questions on the white boards.
 Choose 1 or 2 students to come up to the board and write the answer that
they got on the big whiteboard. (Show us how they got their answer.)
o Ask the class what does a ratio represent? Ratios compares part
to part and part to whole.
o What does a fraction represent? Fractions represents part to 15 min
whole.
o On the board draw a picture of 2 squares and 3 circles, ask the
class to tell you three different ratios that you could use for this
question. 2:3, 3:2, 3:5, 2:5
o Ask students to represent 5:3 pictorially on their whiteboards.
o Draw another picture of 10 smiley faces and 4 squares, ask the
class to write three different ratios that can be represented by the
squares and smiley faces. 10:4, 4:10, 10:14, 4:14, 2:7,2:5, 5:2, 5:7
o Explain that these ratios can also be put into lowest terms and
they would still mean the same thing (review).
