Questions based on information share by appeared student
BOILER ENGINEERING-1&2 (PAPER-1&2) : Total 100 Marks
SECTION-A: 30 multiple choice type questions (30x1=30 marks)

SECTION-B: 15 questions ( 15x2=30 marks)

1) WHICH TYPE OF FEED PUMPS ARE USED IN SUPERCRITICAL BOILERS
?
Answer : Centrifugal type feed pump are used in supercritical boilers.

2) WHAT IS CIRCULATION RATIO?

Answer : [Please refer “PART-B” hard copy book page no 10]

3) WHICH SAFETY VALVE SHOULD LIFT FIRST IN A BOILER

SUPERHEATER OR DRUM SAFETY VALVE AND WHY?
Answer : Super heater safety valve should be lift first because of to avoid
starvation in super heater tubes.

4) WHAT ARE DRYBACK & WETBACK TYPE BOILERS?

Answer :
Dry-back boilers employ a completely submerged self cleaning centerline furnace
which permits for scale formation from water bound solids to drift to the bottom of the
boiler for removal during blow down procedures. The flue gas 'down-draft' design
forces hot gases through the lower part of the boiler where cooler water
accumulates. A nice feature of the dryback boiler is that the fire-side and water-side
access is readily provided. Top longitudinal level service platform ensures safe and
secure access, while bottom longitudinal inspection trough ensures unencumbered
visual access.
Wet-back boilers employ a low offset furnace with completely submerged self
cleaning cylindrical reversing chamber, which permits for scale formation from water
bound solids to drift to the bottom of the boiler for removal during blow down
procedures. Like the wetback boiler, fire-side and water-side access is readily
provided. Top longitudinal level service platform ensures safe and secure access,
while bottom longitudinal inspection trough ensures unencumbered visual access.

5) WHAT IS MEANT BY FLASH STEAM SYSTEM? HOW EFFICIENCY IS

INCREASED IN SUCH SYSTEM?

Questions based on information share by appeared student
Flash steam––This shall not be mistaken for a steam leak through the trap. The
users sometimes get confused between a flash steam and leaking steam. The flash
steam and the leaking steam can be approximately identified as follows:
If steam blows out continuously in a blue stream, it is a leaking steam.
If a steam floats out intermittently in a whitish cloud, it is a flash steam.
Flash steam is produced when condensate at a high pressure is released to a lower
pressure and can be used for low pressure heating. The higher the steam pressure
and lower the flash steam pressure the greater the quantity of flash steam that can
be generated. In many cases, flash steam from high pressure equipment’s is made
use of directly on the low pressure equipment’s to reduce use of steam through
pressure reducing valves.
A flash system should run at the lowest possible pressure so that the maximum
amount of flash is available and the backpressure on the high pressure systems is
kept as low
as possible.

6) WHAT ARE PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN WHILE CHARGING THE

STEAM LINE FROM COLD CONDITION ?
Answer : Precautions during steam line charging:-
1. Ensure steam line drain fully open.
2. Wear PPEs(i.e safety shoes, nose-mask, goggles, hand globe, Ear plug&
safety helmet etc.)
3. Use always suitable size of F-rode to operate valve.
4. Follow right direction of opening or closing (as marked on valve).
5. Always crack open the steam valve & give sufficient time to heating of
steam line
6. Ensure complete removal of condensate from steam line.
7. Prefer always opening of equalizer valve first (if available) .

7) WHAT ARE COMBUSTION PARAMETERS FOR COAL FIRED,OIL

FIRED,STOKER FIRED &PULVERISED FIRED BOILERS?
Answer :
Following are the major combustion parameters for fuel fired boilers :---
1. O2 in flue gas.
2. CO level in flue gas.
3. Air & fuel ratio
4. Furnace temperature
5. Furnace draught
6. Flue gas temperature at boiler exit.

8) WHAT IS THE VELOCITY OF FLUE GAS AND VELOCITY OF

SUPERHEATED STEAM IN BOILERS?
Answer :
S N Types of Boiler Flue gas velocity
1 Atmospheric classic Fluidised Bed Combustion 1.2 to 3.7 m/sec
System (AFBC)
2 Atmospheric circulating (fast) Fluidised Bed 3.7 to 9.0 m/sec
Combustion system(CFBC)

Questions based on information share by appeared student
SN Type of steam Steam velocity
1 Saturated Steam - high pressure 25-40 m/s
2 Saturated Steam - medium and low pressure 30-40 m/s
3 Saturated Steam at peak load <50m/s
4 Steam and Water mix <25m/s
5 Superheated Steam 35-100m/s

9) WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THERMAL EFFICIENCY & NET PLANT

EFFICIENCY?
Answer :
Thermal Efficiency % = (Output heat/ Input heat) x 100

Overall efficiency (Net Plant Efficiency)=

=Boiler efficiency x Turbine efficiency x Generator efficiency

10) WHAT IS STEAM SPACE?

Answer : In fire-tube boiler water partially fills a boiler barrel with a small
volume left above to accommodate the steam (steam space).

11) WHAT IS HEATING SURFACE?

Answer : Heating surface area means transfer of heat form flue gas to
water/steam side to generate desired quality of steam. Heating surface area of
25-30 sq m/ton of steam is required for most oil/gas fired boilers.
