Group Term Hands-on Project


Objective
The aim of this project is to promote students to apply knowledge and skills learnt through this
module in order to conceive, design and implement a small-scale prototype for a mechanical
system. The goal of this project is to implement principles and methods of mechanics of
materials and design, to improve integrative design skills and to appreciate the inherent nature
of mechanical systems. Project ideas come either from the students in the class or from a
presented list each year. Students are advised to feel free to choose one project from the
following list. Students are encouraged to suggest new relevant topics and discuss their ideas
with the course instructor first. Each project weights 10% of the total module grade (report +
discussion). Each student is required to submit a complete design and implementation report on
the latest Dec. 31, 2018.
Description
Students must be assigned to groups of 7 to 10 students on the basis of expressed student
preferences. The team is to suggest a project or to choose from the provided list of projects.
Each team is required to produce a complete design portfolio of the product.
Final report (hardcopy and softcopy on Turnitin)
A final design report must be prepared to document the project design, development and
implementation process. It must follow standard practice for design reports, and should contain
the following:
1. Background and introduction (10%)
2. Description of selected project, including labeled and annotated figures (20%)
3. Detailed product technical specifications (list) (20%)
4. All mechanical/electrical drawings of the developed project (how) (20%)
5. Analysis of the design and implementation (why) (10%)
6. Recommendations for improvement (10%)
7. References (10%)
Working Model
A final working model of the project must be prepared and presented to demonstrate the
following:
1. Feasibility of design (20%)
2. Understanding of mechanics of materials (20%)
3. Integration of various systems (20%)
4. Completeness of design and operation of model (10%)
5. Total effort exerted (10%)
6. Discussion of the project (20%)

Projects & Activities List

1. Child scooter: design a child scooter driven by a small DC motor. The scooter can be
folded and carried easily.

2. Glass tower cleaning: design a platform that can be used to clean the front glass windows
of a tower building.

3. Crashing machine: design a crashing machine that can be used for soft-drink canes.

4. Bearing puller: design a bearing puller that is used for disassemble the fitted parts.

5. Electro-mechanical press: design a 200 kg electro-mechanical press.
