FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

2018
Graham
Physical education is a required class for High School graduation. In order to pass this class, students are
required to be prepared for class and participate on a daily basis. Each student will receive a copy of the grading policies
during the first week of the trimester. If there are any questions on student expectations, please contact the instructor
immediately.

GENERAL PROCEDURES
Physical education classes consist of many different activities. We utilize many indoor facilities including the
gym, wrestling room, weight room and the pool. We also take advantage of the outdoor fields, tennis courts and the track
when the weather is good. Classes rotate on a regular basis to make use of all facilities. Our class schedule is noted
below.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Conditioning / Swim Weights Cardio Game
Fitness

Physical Education clothes may consist of the following:

 An appropriate T-shirt shirt or sweatshirt.
 Shorts or sweatpants.
 Gym shoes (rubber soles).

Students will be expected to change clothes for class every day. If students do not change, points will be deducted from
their grade but they will still be expected to participate in all activities for half credit.

SWIMMING
A bathing suit is required for swimming. (T-shirts or cover-ups may be worn). Missed swim days will result in
a zero for the day until made up on provided scheduled make-up swim dates. ALL MISSED SWIMS SHOULD BE MADE
UP OR STUDENT WILL RECEIVE A SIGNIFICANT POINT LOSS! Make up swim dates will be provided.
**Swim day points will be weighted heavier to encourage participation**

INJURIES/ILLNESSES
Students who are injured during P. E. class must report the injury to the teacher immediately. Students who do not
feel well and are excused by a parent / guardian must make up lost participation time. Students with doctor notes beyond 5
days must make up lost participation time or arrange an alternative assignment if there are physical limitations. Doctors
should indicate what activities the student is permitted to participate in. Students must also be “cleared” by a doctor for
any significant injury before returning to activity.

ATHLETICS
Students who are involved in athletics are required to dress and participate in regularly scheduled PE activities.
**NOT DRESSING / PARTICIPATING DURING CLASS WILL RESULT IN NOT BEING ABLE TO PARTICIPATE
IN ANY ATHLETIC EVENTS**

GRADING
Students’ grades will be based on PARTICIPATION POINTS. Points are earned through sincere effort, hard work
and self-improvement during class activities. Students will be awarded or deducted points based on the Michigan
Department of Education and NASPE Standard 5, “Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self
and others in physical activity settings”. ATHLETIC ABILITY is not a requirement. Daily points are the subjective
evaluation of the instructor. A rubric (the evaluation tool) is also posted in the locker rooms and online. Each day is worth
a maximum of 10 points. Swim day points are weighted heavier to encourage participation. There will also be a final
exam consisting of a 50 question multiple choice test and a physical fitness assessment at the end of the trimester.
Excessive absences (excused OR unexcused) beyond 10 will result in loss of credit and having to re-take P.E. unless lost
participation points are made up.
**ALL unexcused absences will result in a zero for the day. It is the student/parent responsibility to check Home Access.
