The family is a very important part of everyday life. Not only is it important for each person
in the family to participate in family functions, but it is also important that the family participates
in activities throughout the year. The more things that you do as a family, the more memories
(reflect)………………….in later years. Families can provide encouragement during life. “(The
possible)…………………..that exist between two people, or among a group of people, are a
kind of alchemy. They are the (interest)…………… things in life”. I believe that families help to
create the future. They tend to push towards (value)………………….goals in life. Family
members can share similarities; however, there are still differences. For example, a father might
like (watch)……………….inside sports while his son likes outside sports. I grew up in New
Paris, Indiana. The town is rather small, but there are a lot of people driving through it. Traffic is
a lot (bad)……………….on Saturday because of the New Paris Speedway. Since I live out by
the racetrack, on Saturday nights I make plans (get)……………….out of the area for the
evening. “Even pot-holed streets are the (one)…………………..ones when you think you may
not see them again for a very long time” .

I find information about hyper-parenting particularly interesting because it feels like the
opposite of the way I was raised. My early childhood……………………..spent on a small sheep
and cropping farm, and looking back it seems it was filled with oceans of time just………………
away into the distance. As youngsters we were…………………. told to go out and play and
come back at dinner time - which sometimes meant that our parents would have no idea where
we were, or what we were doing!.............................. we would be exploring, building huts,
climbing trees, playing in our "enchanted forest", or swimming in the many
creeks………………..dotted the landscape. It seems to have been a…………………..time
because there were few neighbours………………..by, and the idea of danger from strangers just
never occurred to any of us! Just brothers and sisters free to roam, to fall, to make mistakes, to
learn and to develop concentration, patience and……………….through hours and hours of free
play time.
3- Circle the correct alternative (3 marks)
The generation gap is the constant struggle of the parents to prevent their kids from
doing things that their own experiences and wisdom tell them is going to harm their kids.
The kids on the other hand try (probably / rarely /constantly) to prove to the parents
that they (are equipped/ equipped/ have equipped) to take control of their lives.
Neither is wrong - they are both right (with / on / in) their own premise. The parents
blinded by their love for the kids (could / should / would) rather have their own
experiences (replace / replacing /to replace) the experiences of their kids. Whereas,
the kids are convinced that their decisions are right and are based on (current / difficult
/ personal) situations that the parents may not necessarily be aware of.
