Author: Sarona Migao

Name: The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

In Class Instruction Time: 45 minutes- 1 hour

Group Size: Whole class

Writing skills focus:

-Critical thinking
-Perspective writing
-Expressing problems and solution situations

Teaching Style: Descriptive writing, reflection, group discussions

Learning Objective: The purpose of this lesson is to teach your students how to critically think
(analyze the situation and then form a judgement), After reading the book, “The Lorax,” they
will then create their own creative solution by writing a response to how they would save the
environment if they were the Lorax.

Materials Needed:
● The Lorax book
● Colored pencils
● Lorax print out
● Pencils
● Scissors
Step By Step Lesson Explanation:
1. Gather the students into one area. Read The Lorax by Dr Seuss.
2. Keep the Students engaged by asking questions throughout the reading such as, “Why is
the Lorax angry?” or “What do you think the Lorax did to help the truffula trees?” This
will help the kids be more aware of what is going on in the story. They can begin to see
themselves from the perspective of the Lorax which will help them later on with the
writing prompt.
3. After reading the book, ask the children more detailed questions that will help them
apply the story to themselves personally. For example (What problem did the Lorax face?
Why is it bad that the truffula trees were being cut down? Would you be sad too if you
were the Lorax?) You can explain why it was so important that the Lorax helped the trees
and you can apply it to the real world and how they play an important part in caring for
the environment.
4. Have the children go back to their tables and explain that you are going to pass out a
piece of paper with a picture of the Lorax on it. Tell them to color in the Lorax as if they
were the Lorax. Express to them that they can draw clothes or special hair based on how
they would look as a Lorax. This activity is important to do before the writing because it
lets the students identify better with the story and give it a first person perspective.
5. After the students have finished coloring, have them go around in groups or the tables
where they are seated and explain to at least 3 different kids their personal Lorax. Have
the kids explain these few questions:
● What is special about your Lorax?
● Why did you dress him the way you did?
● How would your Lorax help the environment?
6. Pass out the writing prompt that says “If I was the Lorax, this is how I would help the
Earth..” You can again emphasize the children’s role in protecting the environment. Explain how
the Lorax did his part to save the truffula trees. Tell them that they are going to write a paragraph
of about 5-7 sentences about what they would do if they were the Lorax.
7. Give the children 20 to 30 minutes to write.
8. Go around while the kids are writing and ask each of them to give you a quick run through
of what they would do as the Lorax. Give feedback and help students that may be confused or
needing ideas.
9. After about a half an hour has passed or the needed time to finish, tell the students to turn in
their assignment. These will be graded on if students were able to creatively create a solution to
how they would help the earth. Give them full points if they completely colored their Lorax.
