Ledon and Lexedis
illuminate BMW museum

Ledon and Lexedis, the LED specialist subsidiaries of the Austria-

based Zumtobel Group, have been awarded a contract worth more
than EUR 1.5 million to supply an LED lighting scheme for the new
BMW museum in Munich, Germany. Ledon will supply 120 cm
long, dimmable LED modules to illuminate a series of glass façades.
The modules contain a total of 300,000 nanoXED emitters from
Lexedis. The building opens in spring 2008 and the luminaires are
to be supplied over the course of the next four months.

Osram reports record
results for red, green chips
Osram Opto Semiconductors has reported record results in
the laboratory for green-emitting ThinGaN and red-emitting
AlGaInP large-area chips. The company expects the first LEDs
based on these chips to go into series production by the middle of
2008. Green-emitting (527 nm) chips measuring 1 mm 2 achieved
a luminous f lux in the laboratory in excess of 180 lumens at 1
A. When driven at 350 mA, the chip produced 100 lm and con-
sumed 1.4 W (equivalent to 72 lm/W). Under laboratory condi-
tions, a red-emitting AlGaInP chip with a wavelength of 615 nm
achieved more than 300 lm from an operating current of 2 A.
With a power consumption of 6 W, the efficiency was 52 lm/W.

Photonic Lattice LEDs are new

class of light-emitting device
Using photonic lattice technology it is possible to build large-area chips that enable
ultra-high power sources for projection and other applications,
writes Robert Karlicek of Luminus Devices.

The term “power LED” usually describes one of two types of LED
assemblies: a conventional 1 mm 2 power chip in a power package,
or an array of chips (1 mm 2 or smaller) combined in one of several
different types of power packaging formats (semiconductor chip(s),
package, encapsulant and heat sink). While the performance of
power LED devices has improved dramatically over the past 10
years, the basic concepts haven’t changed too much over the past
forty years: one or more small LED semiconductor chips attached
to a metal packaging structure and covered by an encapsulant/lens
to help extract and shape the light output. Conventional power LEDs
have gradually evolved through incremental improvements in semi-
conductor and packaging materials and manufacturing processes. Figure 1. A green PT120 PhlatLight LED used in rear projection TVs.
Here we describe a new generation of ultra-high-power photonic
lattice LEDs, which operate at input powers as high as 100 W and
are orders of magnitude brighter than conventional power LEDs.

An LED dissipating 100 W requires a packaging platform with

typically encountered in conventional power packages. Problems are
usually associated with thermal expansion mismatch and include
delamination and optical degradation of the encapsulant.
The chip and wire bonds are protected with a window on the air
cavity package. The chips themselves are quite stable in air, and the
window simply protects the chip and wire bonds from mechanical
damage. Like the PhlatLight chip, the PhlatLight package can be
