Fail-safe setting-up operation with a SINAMICS G120 using SLS without an F-CPU

Version 1, Item-ID: 62069920 5

1 Introduction

1 Introduction
When machines are operated in the setting-up mode, frequently it is necessary that
the motors are operated with a safety limited speed.
Generally, external devices are required in this case to monitor the motor speed.
The SINAMICS G120 frequency converter with its integrated safety functions,
represents a favorably priced alternative to these external devices.
The fail-safe setting-up mode using the fail-safe digital inputs of the SINAMICS
G120 – with all of the parameter assignments required – is explained in this
application example.

1.1 Preconditions

NOTICE Please carefully note that it is not permissible to use the SS1, SLS, SDI and
SSM safety functions for pulling or continuously regenerative loads.
A "pulling or continuously regenerative load" is involved, if in the no-
voltage state, the motor is accelerated by the load (e.g. lifting
equipment/cranes, winders, wind turbines).
To use fail-safe functions, the closed-loop control must function perfectly.
Siemens AG 2012 All rights reserved

The drive (system converter + motor + driven machine) must be engineered

so that all operating cases of the particular application can be handled.

NOTICE After activating the STO and SS1 safety functions, there is no electrical
isolation between the line supply of the SINAMICS G120 and the motor. If
this is required in your particular application, then you must install an
appropriate line contactor upstream of the SINAMICS G120.

Switches -S1 up to -S3 are provided on a switch box. These are used to select the
safety functions SS1 and SLS.
Switches -S4 up to -S6 are provided in the SINAMICS training case. Using these
switches, the drives are switched on and switched off, the test function for the
safety functions started and any faults acknowledged.

When Emergency Stop is actuated, the drive is stopped with the SS1 function
integrated in the drive.
In the automatic mode, the drive rotates with the constant speed. If the setting-up
mode is selected (-S2), and the jog button (-S3) is simultaneously kept pressed,
then the SLS safety function is activated. The drive reduces the speed and safely
monitors this. If the jog button is released (-S3) or is not actuated, then the SS1
function is initiated, the drive brakes along the OFF3 ramp down to a standstill and
then it goes into the subsequent STO state.

Advantages of this solution

The solution presented here offers you the following advantages
Simple control of the safety functions integrated in the drive
Simple design based on standard technology
The existing system can be quickly and simply expanded
Space saving and favorably priced solution using integrated safety functions;
no additional hardware is required
Complex safety concepts can be implemented on this basis

3 Wiring diagrams

3 Wiring diagrams
For reasons of simplicity, in this application example, the SINAMICS G120 is
exclusively controlled through the digital inputs, and the setpoint is entered via an
analog input. It goes without saying that the converter can also be controlled via a
fieldbus (PROFIBUS or PROFINET). However, this version is not discussed in this
example. An experienced user will be able to simply make the adaptations
required.
The following wiring diagrams differ regarding the source of the 24 V power supply.
This can be taken directly from the SINAMICS G120 (see Chapter 3.1); however,
an external 24 V power supply can also be used (see Chapter 3.2).

NOTICE The SINAMICS G120 has components at hazardous voltage levels and
controls rotating mechanical equipment, which is also hazardous. If these
warnings are not carefully observed, or if the notes provided in the various
SINAMICS G120 instructions are not followed, then this can result in death,
severe bodily injury or significant material damage.

This message indicates that a

test stop is required for the
safety functions in the drive.
This involves a warning, i.e. the
drive can be switched-on and
20 operated.
In this example, the test stop can
be initiated using switch -S6.
STO is triggered when selecting
the test stop.

4.5 Acceptance test

In order to verify the safety-related parameters, when the machine is
commissioned for the first time and when the safety-relevant parameters have

been changed, an acceptance test must be carried out. The acceptance test must
be appropriately documented. The acceptance reports must be appropriately
stored and archived.
The acceptance test must be carried out after parameterization has been
completed and a power-on reset.
Information about the acceptance test, acceptance report and an example of a
corresponding acceptance report are provided in the "SINAMICS G120 Safety
Integrated Function Manual" in Chapter 4.9 "Acceptance test – completing

commissioning".
From STARTER V4.2 and higher, a feature will be available that will allow you to
generate an acceptance documentation/acceptance report with all of the relevant
parameters. The procedure to generate this acceptance documentation is
described in the subsequent Table 4-4.

5 Commissioning the application

5 Commissioning the application

Configuring the application example was described step-by-step up until now. The
following steps must be observed for the case that the project example is to be
directly loaded into the hardware.
To start, SINAMICS G120 should be restored to the factory setting.

5.1 Preconditions
Preconditions for operation:
o All of the components are connected as described in Chapter 3 Wiring

Switches -S1 up to -S3 are provided on a switch box. These are used to select the
safety functions SS1 and SLS.
Switches -S4 up to -S6 are provided on the SINAMICS training case. Using these
switches, the drives are switched-on and switched off, the test function for the
safety functions started and any faults acknowledged.

6.1 Description
Switching-on/switching-off
Emergency Stop button -S1 must be released in order to operate the drive. Drive 1
(OFF1) is switched-on using switch -S4.

Operating mode selector switch

You can toggle between the automatic mode and setting-up mode using operating
mode selector switch -S2 .

Automatic mode
In the automatic mode, the drive speed can be entered in the range from 0 – 1500
rpm using the potentiometer.

Version 1 09.07.2012 33/37

6 Using the application

Setting-up mode
Safety function SS1 is activated when activating the setting-up mode using the
operating mode selector switch -S2 .
SS1 is deactivated and SLS is activated after pressing the jog button -S3 . With a
delay time parameterized in the SINAMICS G120, the drive speed is
consequentially reduced to 160 rpm and is safely monitored using SLS. The speed
of 160 rpm is obtained from the following parameters:
SLS speed limit p9531[0] * setpoint speed limit p9533 / 100.
In this example:
200 rpm * 80% / 100 = 160 rpm

Emergency Stop
SS1 can be activated at any time by pressing the Emergency Stop command
device -S1 .

Acknowledgement
SINAMICS alarms that are present can be acknowledged using -S6. The test stop
of the safety functions, which is to be cyclically executed, is also activated using

-S6.
