Philosophy, Happiness, and the Meaning of Life

1. The author of the original work is written by the American Professor Robert C. Solomon.

For over thirty years, he was a professor in Business and Philosophy at the University of

Texas of Austin. With such diligent work, Solomon has written more than forty books.

He had designed and provided programs for corporations and organizations around the

world and his books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Professor

Solomon’s work has won him many teaching honors. In addition, he was a member of

Academy of Distinguished Teachers at UT, which devoted in providing leadership in

improving the quality and depth of undergraduate instruction. Tragically, Solomon had

later passed away in early 2007, but his work continues to live on.

2. The meaning of Philosophy, Happiness, and the Meaning of Life is to provide a concise

and engaging introduction to deep and perennial philosophical questions. The idea of

happiness may just be one concompent of our good lives. An exploration of the self, the

universe, and the nature of truth and morality. There should be questions behind the

ideologies of who are we really, or why are we here, and how should we live? If one can

be wrong about their happiness and whether one is happy, then it seems like there is an

objective part of happiness.

3. The historical context behind the following piece draws from the phrase liberty, life, and

pursuit of happiness. America's Declaration of Independence is based on individualism

on certain inherent rights, of which when they enter into a state of society figures.

Happiness is demand as a philosophical contribution to society rather than self

gratification. There is a tradition of individualism, but what part of that gratification is

deemed to be our happiness. The traditions in philosophy have shown how some of

history's most important thinkers and movements have addressed fundamental

philosophical issues. The notion of life, liberty, and happiness as devalued the excepted

meaning and turned it into a larger dimension of questions.

4. The intended audience is this piece is applicable to absolutely everyone. The way people

find meaning of life is through the fundamentals of happiness. While meaning and

happiness don't seem to be the same thing, one might seek truth between the two. The

satisfaction of gratitude being done is an example of a meaningful live. Or one might

have health, wealth, and knowledge-things associated with happy lives, and yet we

continue to live a meaningless life. As for happiness, many people mistakenly think that

happiness is a fleeting feeling pursued for its own sake, when instead it’s often a

by-product of meaningful activities.

5. The works main argument in this is piece is about the real defiance of happiness.

We all could be happy, but we think our lives are ultimately meaningless. Our individual

or universal death undermines meaning behind the purposes we tend to ignore. A good or

happy life is more than just a pleasurable one; a meaningful life is more than just a happy

one. Nonetheless, happiness may be determined more by our happiness set point. The

challenges and tragedies can be seen not as obstacles to happiness, but as the means to

achieve a deeper and more lasting happiness.

Solomon thinks we can choose to do anything, but can we choose to be one way

rather than another. Some people are happy taking satisfaction of themselves, while
others are happy helping out others. Philosophically, happiness can be understood as the

moral goal of life or as an aspect of chance. The level of happiness set by philology is not

done by our achievement of engagement. The engagement of helping others, seeking

knowledge, and becoming wisely aware. Solomon believes this is misguided since

happiness is not a single all encompassing concept. There needs to be an emphasize on

how complex the notion of happiness is while most people think of it in a very simplistic

way.
