Evaluating Websites

Warm-up

Media specialist will ask the following question:

 How do you decide which websites to use for your research?

The media specialist will then ask students to raise their hand if the statements
below apply to them:
 I would use the first ones that come up on the results page.
 I would use the site my friends/parents/teachers told me to use.

She will inform the students that not all websites are credible. The media specialist
will explain to students that the R.E.A.L. method can be used to determine if a
website is credible.

Teach

Students will view the video entitled Evaluating Websites. After the video, the
media specialist will distribute the handout entitled The R.E.A.L. Method. She will
ask students to read the handout silently. After students read the handout, the
media specialist will the discuss handout.

Media specialist will log on to the Internet and enter the following URL:
www.earthsendangered.com. She will inform the students that they will use the
R.E.A.L. method to evaluate the website entitled Earth’s Endangered Creatures
with her guidance.

After completing the guided practice, the media specialist will place the students in
groups and distribute handout entitled Group Assignment. Each group will be
assigned one of the following websites to evaluate.

 Group 1: Endangered Earth

 Group 3: Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus

After evaluating the assigned website, each group will share if their assigned
website is credible or it’s a hoax.

The media specialist will ask the following questions:
