History
Yayoi Festival
An annual event centered at
Futarasan Shrine that has been going
on for over 1200 years, this profoundly
traditional festival proclaims the
coming of Spring. The main event is a
procession of 13 flower-adorned floats,
eight from the east community and five
from the west. (April 16 and 17)
Gōhan Shiki

side-by side, is a famous sacred training
place for the mountain worship for the

Nikkō Yuba
Local Dishes
Soy milk is extracted from soybeans and
boiled, producing a thin skin at the top of the
liquid. The skin is lifted off, and dried…and
that’s yuba. There are numerous ways to eat
it: for example, by including it in sashimi,
Sanbutsudo Hall, at the Nikkōzan Rinnōji sushi rolls, or soba.
This is the main building of the Rinnōji
temple complex. Built during the Heian
Period, this is the largest wood building in
eastern Japan. (Now undergoing renovation
work projected to continue through 2020.)
Shinkyo Bridge Futarasan Shrine
The Futarasan Shrine is dedicated to the three
sacred mountains of the area: Futara (also
called Nantai), Nyohō, and Tarō. The stunning
vermillion-lacquered Shinkyo Bridge(Sacred
Bridge)is part of the shrine, and retains its
long association with mysterious legends.
