Sieve Analysis of Aggregates: Construction Material Testing

Sieve analysis is performed to evaluate the size distribution and grading of aggregates. The aggregate gradation influences the workability of concrete, as it affects the water-cement ratio and paste-aggregate ratio. Well-graded aggregates need less cement and have better workability. Fineness modulus is used to characterize the coarseness or fineness of aggregates on a scale of sieve sizes. The procedure involves sieving a dried sample through a nested series of sieves, collecting the material retained on each sieve, and calculating the percentage passing and retained.

IMPORTANCE

/sieve analysis is performed to evaluate the grading of the particular size

distribution of aggregates. The aggregate gradation influences the workability of
concrete mixes because it affects the water-cement ratio and the paste-aggregate
ratio.

Well-grained coarse aggregate will need less quantities of fine aggregates

and cement since there would be less surface area to be enveloped by the cement
paste. Likewise, well-graded fine aggregates and cement will enhance the
workability and the finishing quality of concrete.

Fineness modulus (FM) is used as an index to give ideas about fineness or

coarseness of aggregates, FM can be looked upon as a weighted average size of a
sieve which the aggregate is retained. This means that if the value of FM in n, then
this refers to the nth sieve in the nest sieves counted starting from the sieve with
smallest opening (i.e 0.15 mm sieve)

PROCEDURE

1. Reduce the field sample to a set sample size by means of quartering.

2. Dry the sample to constant weight at a temperature of 100 ± 5⁰ C.
3. Weight the test samples according to the criteria below:
A. Fine Aggregates

 Aggregate with at least 95% passing a 2.36-mm (No.8) sieve –100g

 Aggregate with at least 85% passing a 4.75-mm (No.4) sieve –500g
and more than 5% retained on a 2.36-mm (No.8) sieve.

B. Coarse Aggregates

12.5 2
19.0 5
25.0 10
37.5 15
50.0 20

4. Nest the sieve in order of decreasing sizes of opening from top to bottom.

D. Sieves for Coarse Aggregates : 40, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, pan

5. Place the sample on the top sieve.

6. Agitate the sieve by hand or by mechanized sieving machine for a sufficient
period.
7. Check if sieving is already sufficient by the criteria used in the test for
fineness of cement by sieve.
8. Get the weight of the sample retained in each sieve.
9. Perform the necessary computations.
