Magic Squares Project

To solve a magic square: 1) Multiply the number of values by the sum of the first and last values, then divide by 2 to get the magic number that each row, column and diagonal must equal. 2) Fill in the values such that the combinations of numbers in each row, column and diagonal add up to the magic number. 3) The middle value is used most frequently and corner values are used second most frequently.

How to solve magic squares

How to do the equation:

• Multiply 9 (number of #’s used) by 28 (last & first # added
up) then divide by 2 to get 126. Then divide the 126 by 3 to
get 42 which is your magic number! 42 will also be the
number that your 8 combinations have to equal to.
How to do the 8 combinations:
• The first combo will start with the largest number. Followed
by the middle number then the smallest number to add up to
42. The middle number will go down to the next number in
your list of 9 numbers. The third number will get bigger so
you will go to your next biggest number in your list of nine
numbers. You cannot repeat numbers so when you cannot do
anymore combos with your first number you go to your next
number. The 8th combo will always be the 3 middle numbers!
How to put the box together:
• 14 goes in the middle because it was used the most.
• 11, 13, 15, & 17 go in the outer boxes because they were
used the second most.
• 18 goes on the top middle because it is used in the 2nd
combo.
• 12 goes in the right middle because it is used in the 5th
combo.
• 10 goes in the bottom middle because it is used in the 3rd
combo.
• 16 goes in the left middle because it is used in the 6th
combo.
Solving Magic Squares

Numbers
being used 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18
# of times
they were 2 3 2 3 4 3 2 3 2
used

This is
9 (28) = 126/3 = 42 your magic
2 number!

The sum of all rows, columns, and diagonals

add up to be 42.

The eight combinations are:

11 18 13 1) 18 + 14 + 10 = 42
2) 18 + 13 + 12 = 42
3) 17 + 15 + 10 = 42
16 14 12 4) 17 + 14 + 11 = 42
5) 17 + 13 + 12 = 42
6) 16 + 15 + 11 = 42
15 10 17 7) 16 + 14 + 12 = 42
8) 15 + 14 + 13 = 42
