Under The Application of A Shear Stress

This document defines key terms used in the study of fluid mechanics, including: - Fluid, mass, weight, density, specific weight, relative density, pressure, dynamic viscosity, and kinematic viscosity. - It also defines hydrostatics as the study of fluids at rest and hydrodynamics as the study of fluids in motion. The document provides the formulas and units for each term to introduce students to vocabulary in fluid mechanics.

MTCC3006 Introduction to Civil Engineering

Week 7: Introduction to Fluid Mechanics

Vocabulary

Fluid: A fluid is either a liquid or a gas. The liquid or gas is a substance which deforms continuously
under the application of a shear stress

Mass (m): The amount of matter in a body (Units: kg).

Weight (W): The force of gravity (g) on a mass (m), calculated by W = m x g (Units: kgm/s2  or N).

Density (ρ): The ratio of mass (m) to volume (V), calculated by ρ = m/V (Units: kg/m3).

Specific weight (γ): The ratio of weight (W) to volume (V), calculated by γ = W/V (Units: kg/m2s2  or
N/m3).

Relative density (s): The ratio of fluid density (ρ) to density of water (ρw), calculated by s = ρ/ρw.

Pressure (P): Defined as the force (F) per unit cross section area (A), calculated by P = F/A (Units: N/m2).

Dynamic viscosity (µ): A property of the fluid that represents the internal resistance of a fluid to motion
(Units: Ns/m2 or kg/ms).

Kinematic viscosity (ν): Defined as the ratio of the dynamic viscosity (µ) to the density (ρ) of the fluid,
calculated by ν = µ/ρ (Units: m2/s).

Hydrostatics: The study of the behavior of fluids at rest.

Hydrodynamic: The study of the behavior of fluids in motion.
