FINAL GRADE GENERAL COMMENTS

85
T his is an excellent dissertation which seeks to
analyse, assess and explain the apparent 'rise' of
China and it geo-political/political economic role in
the global order. T he work contains a good level of
inf ormed detail and demonstrates an academic

/100
balance/objectivity towards the topic.

T he f irst section of the thesis consider the

historical context of Chinese development and how
the state has been transf ormed f rom a command to
a f ree-market economy. T his is counter-pointed by
Chinese inward and outward investment across
f oreign markets and other developing societies.

T here is an ef f ective use of case studies

concerning its growing manuf acturing and f iscal
power. Further, this is compared and contrasted to
the countries global power within in the international
architecture of supra-state politics. T heref ore, there
is an inf ormed account of China's role within the
United Nations.

Finally, there is a detailed account of Chinese

f inancial and cultural power. T he dissertation
provides an equivocal conclusion on how Chinese
power has emerged and what the f uture holds in
terms of supremacy (or not). T his ,makes the point
that China's world leadership is linked in with other
developing states and at prof ound level f or the
balance of power with the US. For instance, is
China's rise directly linked to US decline or is the
relationship more complicated?

T he dissertation is clearly structured, well organised

and insightf ul. It is written with clarity and contains
the material most ef f ectively with ref erence to its
analytical f ocus. T he work is properly proof ed,
ef f ectively ref erenced and contains a good
bibliography.

A very good ef f ort.
