Contrast Media Used

The document discusses contrast media used for sialography, including water-based ionic and non-ionic solutions as well as oil-based solutions like iodized oil. It provides advantages and disadvantages of oil-based and aqueous contrast media. Oil-based media show good contrast but can remain in soft tissues for months and require high viscosity. Aqueous media are easily introduced but provide reduced contrast and are rapidly excreted unless used in a closed system. In summary, the document compares radiographic properties and risks of oil-based versus water-based contrast agents used in sialography.

CONTRAST MEDIA USED: -

The types of contrast media suitable for sialography are[14]

a) Water based solution: these are

1) Ionic aqueous solution including

Diatrizoate (Urografin)

Metrizoate (Friosit)

2) Non –Ionic aqueous solution including Iohexol

(Omnipaque)

b) Oil based solutions including

1) Iodized oil, eg Lipiodol (iodized poppy seed oil)

2) Water insoluble organic iodine compounds eg Pantopaque

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF OIL BASED AND
AQUEOUS CONSTRAST MEDIA.

Contrast Medium Advantages Disadvantages

Oil- Based 1) Densely radio- 1) extravasated contrast

good contrast tissues for many months,

Aqueous 1) Low viscosity 1) Less radiopaque
thus easily thus show reduced

extravasted.
