Benzene: Benzene Nameplate+ Capacity+kt/yr No.+of+++++ Companies

Benzene is the simplest aromatic hydrocarbon and one of the most essential petrochemical building blocks. There are over 500 companies worldwide that produce benzene, with a total nameplate capacity of 66 million metric tons per year. Northeast Asia has the largest production capacity and number of companies. The main drivers of demand for benzene and related chemicals are for downstream petrochemicals and limited fuel use. Over 90% of benzene production is used to produce chemicals such as ethylbenzene, cumene, cyclohexane, and nitrobenzene. The primary production processes for benzene are reformate processing, hydrodealkylation of toluene, and toluene disproportionation.

There  are  two  main  drivers  for  the  demand  of  benzene,  toluene,  and  Xylene  (BTX):
- Chemical  demand,  as  it’s  a  base  of  the  downstream.
- Fuel  demand,  but  it  is  classified  as  a  carcinogen  so  its  very  limited  in  many  countries

Benzene  Derivative,  Over  90%  of  the  demand  for  benzene  is  from  four  demand  segments:
- 51%  Ethylbenzene
- 20%  Cumene

Hydrodealkylation  (HDA)

Toluene  +  H2  →  Benzene  +  CH4
Toluene   and   hydrogen   are   converted   in   a   reactor   packed   with   catalyst   to   produce   benzene   and
methane.    Typically  the  reaction  reaches  a  conversion  of  90%.    The  reaction  is  highly  exothermic.
