Bridge Formwork Without Anchors

The document provides calculations for formwork components used in pile caps for a construction project in Dubai. It references design codes and lists material properties. It then calculates the concrete pressure and checks that the plywood, aluminum beams, steel walers, tie rods, and tilt-up shores can safely withstand the expected loads based on material allowances. The document confirms all formwork components are safe based on bending stress, shear force, deflection, and load capacity.

3) CALCULATION OF PRESSURE ON FORMWORK (TWO SIDE):

The following is an extract from CIRIA Report 108 for Calculating Concrete Pressure on
Formwork:

Considering height of 1.5 M and pouring rate of 0.8 m/h

Therefore the design pressure:

Pmax = D [C1 √R + C2 K √ H - C1 √R ] KN/m2

= 25 [1.5 √0.8 + 0.45 x 1 √ 1.5 – 1.5 √0.8 ] KN/m2

= 38.018 KN/m2 , D h = 25 x 1.5= 37.50 KN/m2
Taking Maximum value i.e. 38.018 KN/m2
𝑃𝑚𝑎𝑥
At = from top.
𝐷

And the pressure envelope is as follows

1.5m

Pmax = 38.018KN/m2

Based on the above pressure we check for the safety of Plywood, distance between Primary
walers, spacing of Aluminum beams and Load on Tie Rod.

A) CHECK FOR PLYWOOD:

Technical data of plywood
Modulus of Elasticity E = 4600 N/mm2
(Cross grain)
Allowable Shear = 4.83 N/mm2

Considering Plywood Strip 10cm

Width of plywood strip = 0.10m
Span of plywood
(B/w Secondary beam) =300 mm

Loading Intensity 0.10 KN/M run:

38.018 KN/M2 x 0.10m= 3.801 KN/M

Check through Bending Stress, Shear & Allowable Deflection

Max. Bending Moment BM = WL2 = 3.801*0.30*0.30 = 0.0342 KN-M

10 10

Max. Shear Force V = 0.60WL = 0.60*3.801*0.30 = 0.684 KN

Allowable Deflection δ = L/270 = 300/270 = 1.11 mm

For 0.10m strip * 18mm thick of Plywood

Section modulus Z =bd2/6 =100(18)2/6 = 5400mm3

Moment of Inertia Ixx =bd3/12 =100(18) 3/12 = 48600mm4
Moment Area about N/A axis Q =100*9*9/2 = 4050mm3
Width of plywood strip B = 100mm

Bending Stress Fbr = M = 0.0342*1000*1000 = 6.336 N/mm2

Z 5400

0.95 mm < 1.11 mm -------------------------------- (SAFE)

B) CHECK FOR ALUMINIUM:

Technical data of Aluminum

Max Span (Length of Secondary) = 0.8M (i.e. max distance between two primary horizontal Walers)

Allowable Shear Force = 45.11 KN

Allowable Bending Moment on Aluminum = 8.75 KNM

Allowable Deflection = L/360= 800/360= 2.22 mm.

Modulus of Elasticity (E) =70,000 N/mm2

Moment of Inertia (I) =458.160423 cm4

Maximum UDL on Secondary beam = 0.3x 38.018

= 11.405 KN/M

Check for Shear Force, Bending Moment & Deflection

Max. Bending Moment BM = WL2 = 11.405*0.8*0.8 = 0.729 KNM

10 10

Max B.M= 0.729 KNM < 8.75 KNM (SAFE)

Max. Shear Force V = 0.60WL = 0.60*11.405*0.8 = 5.474 KN

Max S.F= 5.474 KN < 45.11 KN (SAFE)

Max. Deflection δmax WL4 = 11.405 * (800)4 = 0.100mm

145EI 145*70000*4581604

Max Deflection= 0.100 mm < 2.22 mm (SAFE)

C) CHECK FOR STEEL WALER:

Maximum Span of Waler =0.8m

Allowable Deflection = L/360= 800/360= 2.22 mm.

Load on Waler =2 x Reaction from Secondary

= 2 x 5.474 =10.948 KN @0.25m c/c

Therefore from the above result for primary beam:

Max S.F= 20.53 KN < 100 KN (SAFE)

Max B.M= 3.42 KNM < 11.4 KNM (SAFE)

Max Deflection= 0.26 mm< 2.22 mm (SAFE)

D) CHECK FOR TIE ROD:

Max Tensile force on Tie rod = 38.018 x 0.8 x 0.8 = 24.331 KN < 70Kn (Safe)

E) CHECK FOR PUSH PULL

A) DESIGN WIND SPEED (VS):

Design wind speed as per BS 5975 Clause 4.51.3 is given by

 The design wind speed Vs in m/s for Height of 3.0m is given by the

expression

Vs = V S1 S2 S3

Where,

V = is the basic wind speed in m/s (45m/s)

S1 = topography factor for wind (0.9) from clause 4.5.1.4 BS 5975

S2 = ground surface condition (0.73) from Table 3 of CP3

S3 = statistical factor (0.77) from Table 12 of BS 5975

Applying these values,

Vs = 45*0.9*0.73*0.77

= 22.765 m/s

Project :DUBAI MALL EXPANSION (PILE CAPS) MANAR AL OMRAN

B) DYNAMIC WIND PRESSURE (Q):

 Having calculated the design wind speed the dynamic wind pressure as

per BS 5975, Table 13 gives us 297 N/M2

These wind pressure have to be taken by TILT UP SHORE safely given by,

Q=297N/M2

X=2.80MT

X’= 2.5MT

 Forces which is to be carried by Tilt up Shore is the wind force and

weight of the formwork

Wp = weight of formwork + wind force

Weight of formwork as per BS 5975 = 0.5KN/M2

= 0.50*(3.0*1.5) =2.25 KN

Wind force = 297*(3.0*1.5) =1336 N = 1.336KN

F) CHECK FOR HORIZONTAL FORCE:

Check for Shear Capacity of the 16mm Bar:

The shear force of the Bar should not be greater than the shear capacity given as per
BS 5950 Clause 4.2.3
PV=0.6*PY*A
PY = Design Strength of the bar = 460N/mm2
(Considering S 460 Grade of Steel)
A= Area of the cross section = 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2

=201.06mm2
=0.6*460*201.06 = 5549N =55.49KN
Max force on bar = 24.331KN
24.331 KN < 55.49 KN safe
