Archive Matic A

Archivematica is an open-source digital preservation system that was first developed in 2007. It was originally created as a backend for ICA-AtoM and called Qubit-OAIS. It is based on standards from the International Council on Archives and was influenced by a 2007 UNESCO report calling for an affordable and sustainable open source digital archiving system. The City of Vancouver Archives was an early adopter and worked with developers to create its first digital archive using Archivematica. Over the years it has expanded its functionality and now uses a micro-services architecture and many external tools to allow institutions to preserve long-term access to digital content according to the Open Archival Information System reference model.

History of Archivematica
First developed by Artefactual in 2007 as a
back-end for ICA-AtoM (Access to Memory)
and called Qubit-OAIS.

Qubit-OAIS was based on standards

published by the International Council on
Archives, who were key partners in the
development of ICA-AtoM.
History of Archivematica
Also in 2007, the UNESCO Memory of the
World Programme Sub-Committee on
Technology published a paper recommending
the development and implementation of an
open source digital archival and preservation
system.
History of Archivematica
The UNESCO report suggested that “what
was needed was an affordable, sustainable
approach that could leverage the expertise of
larger institutions with more resources to
innovate and share solutions with the digital
preservation community at-large.”

History of Archivematica
“Over time ... the [Artefactual] development
team recognized that the direct association
with ICA-AtoM may be too exclusive,
obscuring the larger goal to allow
Archivematica to integrate with other
systems.”

History of Archivematica
The City of Vancouver Archives (CVA) was
one of the first institutions to allocate
resources for Archivematica development.

In 2009, the CVA began to work with

Artefactual to create the city’s first Digital
Archive, using the UNESCO report as a
guiding document.
History of Archivematica
Working with CVA staff, Artefactual
developers developed a workflow that aligned
with the Reference Model for an Open
Archival Information System (OAIS), a best
practices framework developed by the
astronomical community for data preservation.
History of Archivematica
Over the years, Archivematica has been
substantially expanded in both interface and
functionality, through both sponsored
development and formal reviews, like the
InterPARES 3 project gap analysis, as well as
grant-funded projects.
