This document outlines a 4th grade social studies lesson on the major battles of the Civil War. Students will create timelines of key Civil War events using an online timeline tool. The lesson addresses social studies standards on explaining the causes and consequences of the Civil War by focusing on important battles. It integrates technology standards by having students use a timeline software as the "Knowledge Constructor." Universal Design for Learning principles are addressed through activating background knowledge, allowing students to demonstrate understanding through the online timeline, and engaging them with an introductory video. Students will be assessed on organizing chronological events and including descriptions in their timelines.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

To utilize UDL into my lesson, I would first start by addressing Representation. I would try and activate
background knowledge by discussing some of the battles from the Civil War, some of the leaders, and some
of the historical figures. If some of the students are from different countries, I could look to see if their
country has been in a Civil War and to help them bridge that gap to have a better understanding of the
American Civil War. To discuss the Action and Expression principle, is to allow the students to utilize the
Timeline software instead of using paper and pencil to create their timeline. To address the engagement, I
could bring in Civil War memorabilia to get the students engaged. I also could start the lesson of with a
BrainPop video on the Civil War.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will start the lesson by giving a mini lesson on the Civil War. I will go over some of the major battles as well
as some of the major leaders and historical figures in this time frame. I will then show a BrainPop video on the
Civil War to give my students a visual of what I just talked about. The students will then be asked to pair up,
and create a timeline of the major battles and events from the Civil War. The students will be asked to utilize
Tmeline, a software tool that can organize their information into a timeline. The students can also utilize an
app called Twile if they prefer this format. Students will be asked to give at least 6 major events and battles.

The students will be assessed by a rubric that will be shown to them before they start their timeline. It will
give them an example of some of the battles that are required (from the standard), and then they are free to
choose other battles. The students can extend on this lesson by then researching these battles and major
events and to have them give descriptions of these events. The students will then be asked to present their

timeline to the class, where they will receive peer feedback and then my feedback. They will receive a grade
on how organized, if the dates are in order, and if they have descriptions.

Reflective Practice:
I think the lesson is a great way for students to utilize technology. This lesson is a great starter lesson to give
the students a timeline of the Civil War. Once the timelines are created, I can then go specifically into each
battle. To extend this lesson, I could bring in Civil War memorabilia to show the students to get them even
more engaged, I could also see if there is a way to check out a local museum in Kennesaw as a field trip for
the students.
