6C Queenstown, New Zealand: Script


Queenstown is the extreme sports capital of the
world. It’s the ultimate destination for people
who love adventure. And if you like taking risks,
you can try anything here – from parasailing to
skydiving. Over 1 million visitors a year come to
Queenstown. This small town is situated in the
dramatic south-western corner of New Zealand’s
South Island. It’s a very beautiful place. The town
lies on the edges of the crystal clear Lake Wakatipu
and it has stunning views of the Remarkables
mountain range.
This area hasn’t always been a tourist destination.
It used to be a quiet sheep farming district. In 1862,
gold was discovered in a river near Queenstown.
The discovery attracted thousands of people to the
area. Suddenly there was a gold rush. But the town
wasn’t popular for long. By the late 1800s, there
was no more gold in the rivers. People started to
leave. By 1900, Queenstown was a much smaller
town again.
After the gold rush, the first tourists started coming
to the area. Famous walking routes were made for
visitors to explore the area on foot. Some of these
paths, like the Milford Track and Routeburn Track
in the nearby Fiordland National Park still attract
thousands of walkers every year.
The most relaxing way to enjoy the stunning
scenery around Queenstown is by taking a trip on
the beautiful old TSS Earnslaw. The Earnslaw first
crossed the lake in 1912. It travels very slowly so
that visitors can enjoy the views. Another option
is a trip on a speedboat. But this is less relaxing.
It’s much harder to admire the views travelling at
speeds up to 85 kilometres per hour.
The Shotover River which runs through deep
canyons into Lake Wakatipu is the location of one
of Queenstown’s most exciting experiences – the
Shotover Jet. The jet has operated since 1970 and
over 2 million people have taken this thrilling trip.
The Kawarau Bridge is on the outskirts of the town.
It was here that the bungee phenomenon started
in 1988 and it still attracts over 300,000 jumpers
a year. There are tandem jumps for people who are
afraid of jumping alone. And if you don’t like taking
risks you can just watch. It’s still an unforgettable
experience!
