Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

There are several ways I can use the Universal Design for Learning principles to support learning experiences
for the students in my classroom. BrainPop has a closed captioning feature that would be very beneficial for
ELL students. In addition to hearing the words from the video, they will also be able to see the videos on the
screen. This can help them to recognize the words while also hearing them. BrainPop encourages and
supports parent interaction as well because these videos and activities can be accessed both at school and at
home. Allowing the student to be able to review the video at home with their parents will help the parents
know what their children are learning about at school. Students are also able to fast forward and rewind
through the video. This is beneficial because if a student misses something, they are able to go back and
review it again if needed.

Lesson idea implementation:
In order to address the standard covering Westward Expansion and the Trail of Tears, I would use this
BrainPop video as a lead-in to the lesson. I would ensure that the closed captioning is turned on to support
visual learners and ELLs. I would play the video once, and ask the students to write down the most interesting
fact they heard from the video. I would play the video again, pausing the video as it plays I order to discuss
key points from the video. After the video, the students will be split into two groups and they will compete in
completing the quiz. The students will be split into groups and they will create a presentation and act out the
Trail of Tears. This can be done through an iMovie, Adobe Video Editor, etc. Each student will be assigned a
specific role and the students will physically act out the events that took place in the Trail of Tears. One
student will narrate the movie. In order to extend student learning to a higher learning level, I could require
the students to involve sets, costumes, and props. This project will be administered over the course of two
weeks.
Students will be assessed and supported through a rubric. Their expectations for the project will be clear
and concise, and they will be able to see what is expected of them. It will cover each different component of
the project, including organization, content, presentation, etc. Each group’s final product will be displayed on
the class website so that parents and family can see their products. After the products are complete, the
students will reflect on their learning through a short online blog post. I will fill out rubrics post comments on
each group’s video in order to provide feedback to students on their projects.

Reflective Practice:
This project could support student learning because students are gaining knowledge of the content in an
engaging way, while also incorporating technology use into the lesson. These videos could be uploaded to the
school website so that other students are able to watch the videos and gain knowledge about the content.
Students could extend this activity further by invite a Historian who specializes in Westward Expansion and
the Trail of Tears. They could also invite Cherokee Indians whose ancestors went through the Trail of Tears
who might have stories to share with the class. Other technology tools that could be used in this project
include: voiceover apps, blogs, and movie making software.
