Reflection
Our community outreach program was held at San Antonio Barangay Hall Binan,
Laguna last February 8, 2019. We gathered small business owners as our participants because
the objective of this program was to give basic knowledge to them on how they should
manage their small business finances. The participants had their registration first before we
started the program. We started our program by the opening prayer, followed by the
welcoming remarks and right after that was the first talk/discussion. The speaker talks about
“How to Manage Your Small Business Finances.” The objective of the discussion was to
identify basic accounting practices, to position your business for future financing, recognize
the need for debt collection and to identify financing sources available. The speaker
introduced to the participants the importance of basic bookkeeping in their small businesses.
It was said that maintaining your records can help you to track the performance of your
business, it helps in making better decisions and it helps to keep you within your budget.
During the discussion, the participants asked some questions related to the topic and the
speaker with the help of the members answered those questions. Most of the participants’
concerned was about the credits in their small businesses, they were asking on what should
they do to those customers who don’t want to pay debts and how to deal with that situation,
then of course the speaker answered the question, he said that there are a lots of ways on how
to deal with this problem, some are the owners can set credits and collection policy and they
can increase the debts as the time goes by. The first speaker discussed about the theories on
said topic, therefore the second speaker discussed the application on the topic. The second
speaker shared his tips in managing the finances of small businesses, since the speaker also
has small business; he shared his own experiences in managing his finances. After the talk,
we gave them supplies that could help in their small business and to start in managing their
finances we provide them book to use in recording their finances. The program ends with the
closing remarks made by the members of the group.
Community Service is an important activity every person should embrace as they are
growing up. Doing community service, a person will find themselves and be exposed to the
lifestyles of other people, which also tend to make the volunteer more aware of the needs of
the less fortunate. In the process of learning, one picks up from what others know and
sometimes one learns from one’s own experience. Many times the success in life comes
through learning new skills, knowledge, capabilities and attitudes. If we narrow our concern
to the success of learning process in educational institutions, the success cannot be measured

as a simple parameter. The success may be seen immediately or it may be felt at a later date.
Success may be felt by an individual or it may be felt by the society. In many societies,
education is seen as cost center and not as profit center. Governments in the world spend
huge sums of money to educate their population. Generally these investments are made
currently with an eye on future generations of the society. All along lifetime of mankind,
education and continuous up- gradation of knowledge have been contributing to development
of society. “The most sublime act is to set another before you.” Spoken by English poet
William Blake, this quote reveals what I believe is a very important – if not the most
important – thing a person can do. Putting others first involves the laying aside of our own
interests and then willingly doing something for another person's benefit. This task, however,
is not an easy one to perform; human nature itself has the tendency to focus on self-related
matters. If we are to put others before ourselves, then we must break away from that
egotistical way of thinking and consider the value of other people and their lives.
Furthermore, as I begin to put others before my own interests, I feel my life has a meaningful
purpose and direction.
Something that continues to baffle me is the selflessness of those who live in poverty.
There have been many scientific studies that revealed that poor people give more than the
people who are well off. How can this be? It makes no logical sense that a person who has
almost nothing can cheerfully give to another person who is just as much in need as he or she
is. Yet, this happens. It is humorous to think of how most rich people having many of their
desires met are not truly satisfied and happy, but a person in poverty, having practically none
of their basic needs met, can humbly give and still be content and joyful. There must be an
answer to this: putting another person before self-centered desires is a powerful action that
not only benefits the one who receives, but also gives a sense of wellbeing and fulfillment to
the one who gives.
Focusing on the needs of others first does not have to involve grandiose sacrifices. It
is something that can be done in everyday life, and is something that, I believe, should be
done daily. Anyone can serve. Service can be as little as washing the dishes, tutoring
someone who needs help, or sitting next to someone who is alone. There is something
indescribable about lowering oneself and exalting another person. It greatly helps the person
in need, and also leaves the giver with a feeling of satisfaction. As Martin Luther King Jr.
wisely said: “Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a
college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You
only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
