FAQ Information Sheet

Introduction: Below are some common questions that are asked concerning the Gifted
and Talented Program. The information below applies to the Fourth Grade students only.

Definition of Giftedness: The term gifted and talented refers to students who show
evidence of superior intellectual ability and potential in specific academic domains and
demonstrate abilities such as leadership, creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking.
These children require additional academic services provided in addition to their regular
classroom environment.

1. What grade do students become eligible for the G&T Program?


Students are evaluated in the spring of third grade for possible admittance at the start
of fourth grade.

2. How often will eligible students receive G&T?


Fourth Grade students will receive G&T, once a week for ½ day.
Fifth Grade students will receive G&T, two times a week – ½ day each session.

3. What are the requirements to be admitted to the G&T Program?


Students who meet the following criteria are invited to participate in the G&T program.

Phase I Phase II (Committee Review)


 OLSAT (3rd grade)  OLSAT (score of 90-94th percentile)
Student Score: a. Performance Task
a. Composite Score: 95th percentile and b. Renzulli-Hartman
above – (student automatically c. InView

4. Are private evaluations considered for admission to the G&T Program?


No

5. Are testing accommodations allowed on the OLSAT?


Any student who is classified and has an IEP or 504 plan will receive his or her testing
accommodations according to his or her plan to provide the best testing opportunity
for the student.

6. When are students notified that they have been selected for G&T?
Students are notified of entrance by the end of August/early September.

7. Does G&T appear on the report card?


No. All G&T students, however, do receive a progress report that accompanies their
second and third trimester grade level report card.

8. How do I go about having my child considered for G&T if they are new to
the district and/or were in a gifted program in another district?
The district policy states that all new entrants to the district will be given the
opportunity to take the Gifted and Talented entrance exam. A letter detailing the
evaluation procedure will be mailed home. From there the student must meet the
necessary criteria.

9. How is my child re-evaluated for G&T if they did not meet the requirements
at their first eligibility?
If your son’s or daughter’s composite score is 80% or higher he/she may be re-
evaluated. Students who received a composite score of 80 or above and did not
originally qualify may be re-evaluated as a 4th grader.

10. What responsibilities does a child have upon being admitted to the
program?
G&T students are responsible for completing assignments and maintaining above
average grade level performance in both their home classroom and G&T.

11. Once admitted, is a child in the G&T Program for the remainder of the
school year?
All G&T students are evaluated each trimester. All current G&T students will be
monitored throughout the year. If it is determined that they are underperforming
in the classroom or G&T, he/she will no longer be eligible to continue in the
program.

12. Once my child is in G&T is he/she in for the remainder of elementary


school?
No. All current G&T students are evaluated on a yearly basis. If it is determined
they are not performing at a high level academically, both within G&T and in the
classroom, they will be ineligible the following year.
