Course Structure: FINE ART
GCSE level art is divided into 3 distinct phases.
1. STAGE 1: At the start of Year 10 you will work on a project introducing you to the skills
required at GCSE Level. You will also learn how to structure and develop an art project.
2. STAGE 2: in term 3 of Year 10 you will start your main coursework project (personal
portfolio). This will be worked on until the end of December in Year 11. This project will
also include a mock examination. This will be formally assessed by your teachers and the
feedback should provide an opportunity to refine your work further.
3. STAGE 3 EXAM UNIT: From the start of January in Year 11 you will work on a new project,
the externally set assignment (ESA). For this you will have ten weeks of preparation
followed by the actual GCE examination of 10 house. The theme for this project is
normally broad and set by the examination board.

CAREERS
There are many things you can go on to do with a GCSE in Art/Design.

You may wish to take this course for its own sake, simply because you
like the subject.

Alternatively, you might wish to go into a job where it is useful to

have had experience of Art, Craft and Design, where you will need to
use some of the skills developed during the course. These might
include careers in such fields as advertising, marketing, design,
architecture, publishing and the media.

Whichever is chosen, the study of Art can help students develop

transferable skills which you can take into any career or job – we
highly value the Super Sixteen learning skills.
