HA Principles
• No Single Point of Failure:
Redundant, Load Sharing Power Supplies and Fan Trays.
Redundant Ethernet Switches.
Dual star cPSB Ethernet connectivity.
Redundant: System Controllers, VoP Cards, Alarm Boards
No usage of PCI bus. Limited, non-critical usage of H.110
APS protection on PSTN (STM-1) and ATM interfaces.
• Fault Handling:
Detection – BIT, heart beat, chassis sub - (systems monitoring by alarm
card)
Location – Supported by fault detection mechanisms
Isolation – reset support
Recovery – using redundant boards and chassis sub-systems
Reporting – to EMS and NMS via SNMP.
Repair - Hot swap removal of all system elements
Reintegration – Hot swap insertion

N+1 redundancy
Board Failure detection:
Continuous on line diagnostics
Heartbeat is sent to SC every 10ms
Board state, including information needed for seamless
switchover.
Switchover may be initiated by VoP board, SC or EMS.
Upon switchover:
The redundant board is updated with the failed board state.
PSTN interfaces are switched over the backplane to
redundant board.
The redundant board assumes the IP address of the failed board
Switchover control busses and logic circuitry are duplicated to
avoid erroneous switchover.
