Frankenstein Rap Assignment (due Friday March 29th)

Please do not be put off by the word “rap.” You may think of your assignment as a poem, an
outlaw country song, a punk rock diatribe, a sugary synthpop anthem, an international K-Pop
hit, etc. My only stipulation is that you satisfy the requirements of the assignment.

You will be sharing these aloud in class.

The Assignment:

You will be writing a rap about the novel Frankenstein that explores some concept from or part
of the novel. This rap can explore a scene, a character(s), a theme, etc. Consider the point of
view of the rap – are you taking on the guise of a character? Are you an omniscient third party
outside of the novel? Are you an inanimate object in the scene? Hmm…

- Your poem/rap should be 32 lines.

- Your poem/rap must have a theme. Remember our equation for theme: Topic + Stance
= Theme. This theme can be anything relevant to the novel, but it must have a point and
cohesiveness.
- You will organize your poem into eight quatrains. Each quatrain must utilize end rhyme.
Why? It’s fun. There are many online rhyming dictionaries. Use them.
- Your rhyme scheme may not change throughout the entire poem unless there is a
reason for it. For example, say your rap has two characters talking to each other (e.g.
“Stan” by Eminem or “I’ve Got You” by the White Buffalo): one character’s stanzas may
be in ABAB while the other character’s may be in AABB to signify a shift in perspective.
The point is that you are writing intentionally, as all good work must be written.
- You must use and label eight literary techniques such as simile, metaphor, alliteration,
synecdoche, etc. Here is one of many websites that can help: http://literary-
devices.com/
- You need to use a total of at least eight vocabulary words from Frankenstein. These
words must be labelled with the page number the word is found on, the part of speech,
and a definition in your words. Please do not mindlessly string vocabulary words
together, you should use each word properly and do not use more than one or two
vocabulary words per line.
