The document discusses RO membrane cleaning procedures. It describes common membrane foulants like scales and deposits that require periodic cleaning. The cleaning process involves circulating alkaline and acidic cleaning solutions followed by thorough rinsing to remove all chemical residues. The general cleaning procedure takes 4-6 hours and includes two cleaning solution stages followed by rinsing, an optional soak, and final flushing before returning the RO system to service.

RO MEMBRANE CLEANING

During normal operation over a period of time, RO membrane elements are subject to fouling by
suspended or sparingly soluble materials that may be present in the feed water. Common examples
of foulants/scales are:

 Calcium carbonate scale

 Sulfate scale of calcium, barium or strontium
 Metal oxides (iron, manganese, copper, nickel, aluminum, etc.)
 Polymerized silica scale
 Inorganic colloidal deposits
 Mixed inorganic/organic colloidal deposits
 NOM organic material (Natural Organic Matter)
 Man-made organic material (e.g. antiscalant/dispersants, cationic polyelectrolytes)
 Biological fouling (bacterial bioslime, algae, mold, or fungi)

RO CLEANING SKID\LAYOUT

It is recommended that the source water for chemical solution make-up and rinsing/flushing should
be clean RO permeate or DM water and be free of hardness, metals (e.g. iron), and chlorine. Major
cleaning system components are:

1. RO Cleaning Tank: This tank needs to be sized properly (200 litre for 1000 LPH plant) to
accommodate the displacement of water in the hose, piping, and RO elements.
2. RO Cleaning Pump: This pump needs to be sized to develop the proper cross-flow velocity to
scrub the membrane clean.
3. RO Cleaning Cartridge Filter: Normally 5 to 10-micron and is designed to remove foulants
that have been displaced from the cleaning process.
4. Reject/Permeate Return Line: All the reject water must be return to the tank. A small amount
of the cleaning solution can permeate through the membranes and so a permeate-side return
line back to the RO Cleaning Tank is required.
5. Instrumentation: pH meter and TDS meter.

RO MEMBRANE ELEMENT CLEANING AND FLUSHING PROCEDURES

RO cleaning procedures may vary dependent on the situation. The time required to clean a stage
can take from 4 to 6 hours.

A general procedure for cleaning the RO membrane elements is as follows:

1. Perform a flush by pumping clean water from the cleaning tank through the pressure tubes to
drain for several minutes. Flush water should be clean water of RO permeate or DM quality
and be free of hardness, metals, and chlorine.

2. Make a first batch of cleaning solution by adding 2-3% of CHEMTECH RO 505B (alkaline/basic
cleaning chemical) in the cleaning tank (i.e. 2-3 litre of chemical dilute in 98 litre of water).
The dilution water should be clean water of RO permeate or DM quality and be free of
hardness, metals, and chlorine.

3. Circulate the cleaning solution through the pressure tubes for approximately 1-2 hours. Make
sure the pH of circulating solution must not go below 11 (i.e. maintain 11 pH throughout the
circulation). If required, readjust the pH back to 11 by adding few quantity of CHEMTECH RO
505B.

4. Upon completion of the first stage of cleaning, a Rinse/Flush with clean water (RO permeate
or DM) is required to remove all traces of chemical from the Cleaning Skid and the RO Skid.
To know the completion of flushing check reject water pH, this must go down to 8.5. Drain
and flush the cleaning tank.

5. Make second batch of cleaning solution by adding 2-3% of CHEMTECH RO 505A (acidic
cleaning chemical) in the cleaning tank (i.e. 2-3 litre of chemical dilute in 98 litre of water).
The dilution water should be clean water of RO permeate or DM quality and be free of
hardness, metals, and chlorine.

6. Circulate the cleaning solution through the pressure tubes for approximately 1-2 hours. Make
sure the pH of circulating solution must not go up 2 (i.e. maintain 2 pH throughout the
circulation). If required, readjust the pH back to less than 2 by adding few quantity of
CHEMTECH RO 505A.

7. Upon completion of the cleaning, a Cleaning Rinse/Flush with clean water (RO permeate or
DM) is required to remove all traces of chemical from the Cleaning Skid and the RO Skid. To
know the completion of flushing check reject water pH, this must go up to 6.5.

8. An optional soak time from 1 to 8 hours can be used, if required, depending on the
membrane condition.

9. Once the RO system is fully rinsed/flushed of cleaning chemical with clean water from the
Cleaning Tank, a Final Clean-up Flush can be performed using pretreated feed water. The
permeate line should remain open to drain. This final flush continues until the flush water
flows clean and is free of any foam or residues of cleaning agents. This usually takes 15 to 20
minutes.

10. Once all the chemicals flushed out, the RO can be restarted and placed into a Service Rinse.
The RO permeate should be diverted to drain until it meets the quality requirements of the
process (e.g. TDS and pH). It is not unusual for it to take from a few hours to a few days for
the RO permeate quality to stabilize, especially after high quality cleanings.
