First Day of School

Morning Meeting

Gather students at the carpet

● When I say “To Infinity” you say “And beyond!”
● “To Infinity!” students respond “And beyond!”
● Alright boys and girls, it is time for our very first classroom meeting.
● I am going to ask you to quietly put your pencils in your desk, and then
quietly head to the carpet for our morning meeting.
● When you get there, sit criss cross applesauce and put your hands in you
lap.

Introductions
● Good Morning boys and girls! I am so excited to be your teacher this year!
● We are going to get to know each other really well this year! Our class is
going to be like a team. We are going to be working together and helping
each other learn.

● I want to give you a little introduction of me before you all get to learn
about each other later today.
● This is my ____ year teaching. I went to college at Spring Arbor University.
● I love to read and be outside! My favorite things to do are hammock and
run in the woods in my backyard.
● This summer I did a lot of fun things! I went to Lake Michigan and layed on
the beach, I went up north and rode on some jet skis, and I swam in the
pool.
● I have two brothers and two sisters that are all younger than me and we
like to play card games together and watch movies.
● This year, I am most excited to get to know you all and to help you learn all
the material you need to move onto fourth grade!

Beginning of the Day Procedures

● Now that you know a little bit about me, I want to go over a few things
about how our mornings are going to start each day.
● Every morning, I will greet you as you come in.
● When you come into the classroom, place all your materials to your desk,
and put down your chair.
● After you have put away all of your materials, you will make a lunch
choice. I will have you make your lunch choice in a few minutes.
● Your options for lunch choice are hot lunch, cold lunch, or peanut butter
and jelly.
● To make your lunch choice, you will grab your number (which is on your
nametag on your desk) and move your magnet to that section of the
magnet board.
● After making your lunch choice, you will get your planner from your desk.
● Every day, your planners will be written in at the end of the day. This is to
tell your parents what we have done today! To make sure that they have
seen your planner, your parents will need to initial or sign your planner

every night. Your planner is a great place for your parents to send notes to
me if they need to.
● After grabbing your planner, you will open it to today’s date, and lay it on
the kidney table for me to check.
● When you have finished placing your planner on the kidney table, you will
start working on your word sorts.
● Your word sorts will be your spelling words for that week. You will have to
sort them based on patterns you see in the words.
● We will talk more about the word sorts later this week.
● After working on your word sort, you will then start on your daily math
problems.
● There is a laminated sheet of that we will use for math problems every
morning. I post a slide of instructions for each day’s math problems.
● If you finish all of these tasks before it is time for our morning meeting,
then you may silently read.

Voice levels
● One more topic that we need to cover before doing a fun team building
activity is noise levels.
● We are going to have some noise level expectations for every activity so
that we do not disturb others in our classroom, or our neighboring
classrooms.
● A level 0 is silent. I should not be able to hear any voices. A level 0 voice
would be used when we are doing silent reading.
● A level 1 voice is a whisper voice. This level would be when we are doing
writing and you want to ask a question to your neighbor.
● A level 2 voice is a quiet conversation voice. This would be used when we
do a think pair share during a mini lesson at the carpet.

● A level 3 voice is a table collaboration voice. When you are working with
your table, you may talk at a normal volume. Not too loud, but not quiet so
that all your table mates can hear you.
● A level 4 voice is a presentation voice. This voice is louder than your
normal volume, but not yelling. This level would be used if you are
presenting a project, or if you have a question or answer for the class. This
way everyone can hear you.
● A level 5 voice is only for recess.

Team building activity

● Now I mentioned before that we are going to be a team this year!
● To be a team, we need to help each other out.
● This morning, we are going to do an activity that is going to teach us
teamwork.
● We are going to walk outside and form a circle.
● Now everyone hold hands.
● Our goal is to get this hula hoop all the way around our circle, without
letting go of each others hands.
● I will show you how to do it so that its a little easier.
● We have to help each other as we do this!
● I am going to time us this time and then we are going to try and beat our
time when we do it again.
● Great job everyone! Your time was _________.
● Now this time that we do it, everyone cheer each other on.
● Great job! Everyone did a wonderful job cheering each other on! Our time
this round was _______. That is faster than it was before!
● We do better when others are cheering us on. This is what we have to do
every day in our classroom. We have to keep encouraging each other in
everything we do.
● Now let’s head back inside for our writing time.
