The writing of characterizations

Having read a story you may be asked to describe its main characters. This involves not only
a collection of all the facts from the text but an interpretation of the content as well. Convenient
for a characterization is the outside to inside pattern, i.e. you move from the outward
appearance of a person to his/her inner nature.
People can be characterized by:
 their action
 the things they say
 the things other people say about them
 their language
 mime and stage directions (drama)

How to construct a characterization

1. Collect all factual elements.

2. Ask yourself: Did any characteristics change during the development of the text and how?
(In many cases this point might be the most important one).
3. Group all related material and decide which secondary points may be left out because they
are included in others.
4. Make either a sentence or a paragraph outline (state the main ideas of each paragraph)
5. Write a rough draft, revise and copy.
