BPT Lesson Idea

This lesson plan introduces pre-K students to farm animal vocabulary through a narrated PowerPoint presentation. The lesson allows students to explore toy farm animals before watching the presentation, which names and describes the animals. Students are then asked to identify the animals in a picture. The teacher assesses student understanding and provides additional practice for students who cannot yet recognize all the animals. To extend learning, students view more pictures of farm animals and interact with toy animals and pictures during play. The lesson concludes by showing students how to simply create their own two-slide PowerPoint about an animal of their choice.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: All students are engaged and can be engaged in the viewing of the presentation.I offer many
modalities to participate, including play, art and listening.
Representation: All students are represented and acknowledged. The teacher calls all students up to see
what they knew and ask them about their understanding.
Action and Expression: There are multiple opportunities for action, when playing the students can act out the
animals, they can use their voices to reenact the animals noises and show each other the animals. The
children are offered opportunities to express themselves through a drawing, noises and play.

Lesson idea implementation:

For this activity, I will introduce the children to the animals by showing them the toy versions of the animals
and letting the children explore them as I talk about the animals. I will tell them that we are going to watch a
presentation about the animals after we play.
After the children play, we will come together and watch the PowerPoint.. As we read the story I will ask the
children what the animals look like and the sounds that they make. At the end of the PowerPoint the children
are asked to find the animals in a picture. I will use this as the assessment and have each child come to show
me the animals in question. I will use whether the students could identify the animals or not to guide me in
lesson planning. If the students can recognize all animals I will know that they have mastered the concept. If
the students are not able to identify the animals, I will work with them individually on animals.
To extend the learning I will have the students look at more pictures and scenarios to identify the animals. I
will put the toy animals and pictures of the animals in the play area to help the children to remember the
names and sounds of the animals and use them in play.
To conclude the lesson I will show the students the ways that I made the presentation and in dvery simple
ways to have the students work collaboratively and with teacher support to create their own two slide
PowerPoint about an an animal of their choice.

Reflective Practice: I feel that this activity will help my students to learn about farm animals in a fun and
creative way. This activity can impact student learning by introducing them to new vocabulary in interesting
ways and allowing them to create a work of art. I used this lesson as an introductory to farm animals. To
extend the learning I could allow the students to do an interactive tour of a farm online. They would be able
to see all of the animals on the farm, where they live, what they sound like and how they interact.
