This document outlines the syllabus for a 10-week Biohacker 101 course that teaches basic biology and genetic engineering techniques. The course is taught on Wednesday evenings starting January 9th by instructors Dr. Josiah Zayner and Esther Kim. Guest lecturers Dr. Kate Adamala and Dr. George Church will also present. Over the course, students will learn to culture bacteria and yeast, genetically modify cells, and design their own CRISPR experiments. Required materials include a molecular biology textbook, bioinformatics software, and lab equipment which is provided with the class fees. Each week will involve readings, experiments, and a monthly one-page paper summarizing topics covered that month.

Course Description
This course will go from cells to DNA to protein. It will give students a basic understanding of how to genetically
edit cells and what that means. The course also provides an extensive hands-on component so that students by
the end should be able to genetically modify cells on their own and understand physically what that constitutes.

Course Goals
Students who complete this course successfully will be able to:
 Use laboratory equipment like scales and pipettes
 Understand sterile technique and antibiotic usage
 Culture bacteria and yeast
 Genetically modify bacteria and yeast
 Use CRISPR and design their own CRISPR experiments
