Spring is for the Young
by Bruce Auchly, FWP
Not all creatures have given up on spring ever happening.
Some are counting on it. And soon.
Great horned owls and Canada geese are sitting on eggs
now, or soon will be.
Two totally different Montana bird species with
different diets and nesting habits have placed all their
eggs in one spring basket.
Great horned owls are sitting on eggs now, that will
soon hatch if they haven’t already, because they must.
Think back to those January nights that, looking back,
seemed downright subtropical. If you heard a hoot-hoot-
hoot, it was the mating ritual of the great horned owl. No
other Montana owls court and mate during the winter.
After mating, the owls will continue to hoot into
February, not so much to proclaim their love and affection
but to stake out a territory and warn other owls away.
So, the great horned owl mates and begins nesting
in the dead of winter, which this year was February and
early March. Must be crazy, right? Maybe. Or maybe no Has this great horned owl taken over a designated

‘Spring sports for ya...’

“If you fight it you end up making a mess,” was how STEAK FRY
Glasgow Assistant Track Coach Wade Nelson explained Friday, Mar. 22
the track and field conditions up on the hill, “we’ve just 5pm~7pm
got to let Mother Nature take her course.”
Glasgow’s first scheduled meet is Saturday, March
30th, but it’s not looking good, especially with more
precipitation in the forecast this weekend.
The athletes have been practicing in the gym and
have actually hit the track a couple of times this week,
but the field is still too sloppy to get any practice in those
events. Itʼs all happening
Coach Nelson explained that the track itself should
be in good shape for timed events, it’s highly doubtful
at
the vfw
that the field will be useable and therefore, no use of
having a track meet as all 17 events have to occur to be
sanctioned.
Scotty softball is in the same boat.
But as Coach Nelson says, it seems we go through
this nearly every year.
“That’s spring sports for ya,” he said.
