A Colourful Trick
Last year, my sister Pam was training to be a hairdresser.
On April Fool’s Pay, she decided to practise on my hair.
She convinced me to have a short haircut.
First, she washed my hair with shampoo. Then she cut it
short. I liked the new style very much. But while she was
drying my hair, she suddenly poured red juice on it
and pretended it was real hair colour. My hair
looked terrible and I was very upset. When I
saw the smile on Pam’s face, I remembered it
was April Fool’s Pay. Pam was laughing when
she showed me the bottle of juice. But she
stopped laughing when she tried to wash it
out of my hair. The colour didn’t come out!
My hair was red for two months and
everyone laughed a t me. Pam felt terrible.
She never tried to trick me again!

Blogshows
Is if your dream to host your own radio show? Well, maybe your dream
will come true. In the future, millions of people will host their own radio
shows. How? All they need is a computer with Internet connection, a
phone, and something to say. Then they can log onto BlogTalkRadio.com
and host their own blogshow.
Blogshows are different from ordinary radio shows because more people
can listen to them. Your blogshow will reach people all over the world. It
will be different from a blog too, because instead of trying to write about
things, you can just say them. During your show, listeners can phone in and
talk to you. You can receive as many phone calls as you want. You can
even have a conversation with five people at once!
Soon, ordinary radio shows will be a thing of the past. Blogshows are
going to be on mobile phones too, so people will listen to them wherever
they go. And whats the best news? You will have a chance to make
money from your blogshow. The service is free, and when your show v o v / / 7 /1 1,

,4 Look Around You

Have you ever noticed that there are optical illusions
all around us? The first people to think of using optical
:

I illusions were the Greeks. They used them to make their

temples look larger. Today, people still use optical illusions
in architecture, as well as in entertainment, fashion, the
media and more. But how does it work?

Everywhere we go, there are buildings with pointed

or cone-shaped roofs. These roofs give the illusion of
height, so buildings seem taller than they really are.
Another clever illusion is the use of mirrors to make
rooms look larger. Cinemas, televisions and computers
; |f all use optical illusions to make pictures move. The images
-1 change very quickly so our brain "sees” them as one
moving picture. Also, we see millions of colours on the
television screen, but there are really billions of tiny dots
in only three colours; red, blue and green. Computers
"I and magazines also use this colour illusion.
We sometimes use optical illusions without even thinking
about it. For example, people put dark lines around their
eyes to make them look bigger and brighter. Dark make
up makes our face look thinner, and light make-up makes
it look rounder. Dark clothes also make us look thinner,
and wide bottoms on trousers make us look taller. Look
around you. You might be surprised at how many optical
illusions you see.

1. Who first used optical illusions? Write a paragraph about the optical illusions
you see in your environment.

2. Why do pictures on television appear to move?

3. How many colours are there in a magazine?

4. How can we make our eyes look bigger?

5. What can we wear to look taller?

A "SilflRT" TROLLEY
You're putting some hamburgers in your supermarket trolley, when suddenly you hear
a voice. "Why don't you get a new frying pan to cook those hamburgers? You’ll find
them in the next row.” C a n you guess who’s talking? No, it isn't the shop assistant. It’s
the shopping trolley!
Soon, all supermarkets may have this clever shopping trolley. It has got a computer
screen and scanner to scan the bar code on everything you put in the trolley. In the
future, every product in the shops will have this bar code on it. The trolley will know
what you are buying and it will be able to suggest what to buy next.
It will be as good as having a personal assistant with you! But will
this make shopping easier than it is now, or will it convince people
to buy things they don’t need?
Not everyone finds this new invention appealing. M any people
enjoy going shopping to spend time on their own, after a hard day
at work, or taking care of the family. They are too tired to hear
another voice telling them what to do. The shopping trolley also
encourages people to be careless with their money. When people
like spending money but know they shouldn't, it becomes hard to
say no to every suggestion. But if you hate making decisions at
the supermarket, the talking trolley will be a great solution for you.

1. The supermarket trolley has got a Scanner) / bar code.

2. The trolley knows / doesn’t know what you are buying.

Shopping Tips
Many people love shopping but sometimes they re not careful enough. Are you an efficient
shopper, or are you easily tricked into buying things you don t need? Shops look like friendly
places, but they aren t alw ays what they seem. Sometimes shop owners use clever methods to
convince you to buy things. So read these shopping tips before you go shopping again.
Mirrors
In most clothes shops, there are special mirrors to make
you look thinner and taller than in real life. The clothes
look fantastic on you in the shop, but at home they
don’t look as good as before. So in future, when you’re
shopping for clothes, check out the mirrors.
Labels
Some shops put the wrong sizes on the clothes. People
are very happy when they can fit into a smaller size
than usual, and they buy the clothes. So don’t pay too
much attention to the size on the label. Buy clothes
because they feel comfortable and look good.
Sales Talk
"You look fantastic in that!” How many times have you
SALE
heard a shop assistant say that? Shop assistants are
usually very friendly, but don't believe everything they
tell you. Don’t forget, they’re trying as hard as they
can to make a sale.
So the next time you decide to go shopping, be prepared! Make a list of things you need and
only buy the things on the list. We also recommend going shopping with a parent or friend.
They will tell you the truth!

1. How do the mirrors in the shop trick you? Write a paragraph about your opinion of
shopping. Make sure you answer the following
2. Why do shops put the wrong labels on clothes? questions.

London’s Slang
Different areas of England have developed different types of slang. The most famous
is the Cockney rhyming slang of the East End of London. Although Cockney rhyming
slang is well known, no one really knows exactly how it started because it wasnt
recorded in writing. However, in the past, many people said that the slang was a
secret code used by thieves.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Robert Peel started a police force in
London's East End. When this happened, local thieves suddenly had a problem.
They needed to communicate with each other, but they didn’t want the
police officers to understand what they were saying. Experts explained that
Cockney slang solved that problem.
Instead of using the actual word, thieves used a rhyming word. For example,
instead of saying, “I hit him on the head," the thieves said, “I hit him on the
loaf of bread.’ To make things even more complicated, they sometimes said
only the first word, so head became loaf and the phrase became, “I hit him
on the loaf.” While not everyone believed that thieves invented Cockney
slang, it is easy to see how this rhyming code could confuse the police and
keep them on their plates of meat (feet), chasing criminals!

Dear Linda,
I’m having a great time in the USA. It really ie a country full of surprises. Yesterday, for example,
my cousin Tim said th a t we were going to celebrate a popular festival - Cinco de Mayo! He
told me th a t there were a lot of Mexicans in the United S ta te s and the Mexican culture and
language were part of American life. In fact, the Mexican festival Cinco de Mayo is more popular
in the USA than it is in Mexico!
Tim explained th a t Cinco de Mayo celebrated Mexico’s defeat of the French army a t the Battle
of Puebla on 5th May, 1£>62. It is a day of national pride for Mexicans.
We started our celebrations in the city centre. Thousands of people were there. There were
bands and dancers with castanets, and the mayor of Los Angeles gave a speech in Spanish.
Children tried to break piñatas so the streets were covered with colourful sweets. Later, we went
to a park where we watched fireworks and ate a lot of delicious Mexican food.
We returned home around midnight. Before we went to sleep, Tim said th a t he was preparing
another American experience for me for the next day - a trip to Chinatown!
Bye for now,
Robert

j film Review
l Do you like science fiction, horror or mystery films? If you do, you will love
Signs, because it's got all of these genres in one. Mel Gibson stars in this
exciting and scary film about strange creatures from another planet.
Signs looks at the real and unexplained phenomenon of crop circles.
These are strange circles which have appeared in fields around the world.
The cause of crop circles is a mystery. M any people believe they are a
hoax, but usually, there isn’t any evidence of anyone entering or leaving
the area. Some people believe creatures from another planet made the
circles. Other people believe they are signs that are warning us about
something. Probably, the end of the world.
In Signs, the mother of the Hess family has recently died in an accident,
and the father, Graham Hess (Mel Gibson), has recurring nightmares
about the tragedy. A series of bizarre occurrences add to the family’s
problems. They find crop circles in their field, see strange lights in
the sky and hear weird noises. The family soon discovers that
little green men from another planet have arrived. They realise
something big is going to happen. And it probably won’t be good. y •*

Yesterday, I went on a different type of tour around London.
It was an incredible experience, because I wasn’t really there!
It was a virtual reality tour on the Internet.
I started my tour at the Tower of London, which was a famous
prison where many important people were kept. I saw the
magnificent Crown Jewels there. These jewels were worn by
British kings and queens in the past, and they are still used by
the Queen today. They are kept safe in the Tower of London,
but tourists are allowed to see them.
Next, I went on the London Eye, the biggest wheel ever made.
There is an am azing view of the city from the top. I looked
down at the River Thames and I saw the Houses of Parliament
and Big Ben.
After that, I went to London Zoo. It is one of the oldest zoos
in the world. It has got all kinds of animals. The first reptile
house in the world was opened in London Zoo. You can see
the reptile house in the Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and The
Philosopher's Stone.
The tour ended in Hyde Park. Thousands of tourists visit the
park every year. You can go horse-riding, boating or enjoy
walking around the beautiful park.
It was a great tour. M aybe I'll visit Paris next time!
