c. apply the distance formula to prove some geometric properties.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

A. Topic: Distance between two points
B. Sub –topic: Pythagorean Theorem
C. References: Quipper ¸ Soaring High Mathematics 10
D. Instructional Materials: Projector if available¸ laptop¸ and manila paper
E. Values Integration: Comprehension and Cooperation

III. PROCEDURE:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

- Good morning! - Good morning sir!

- Kindly settle down and arrange - Yes sir!
your chairs properly so that we can
start immediately our discussion.
- Please remember again our rules: - Yes sir!
the only noise allowed in our class is
academic noise and do not
interrupt the information’s whether
that is from me or from your
classmates.
- Las Friday¸ we ended up our
discussion by a quiz and productive
interaction.
- Kindly bring out your cellphone¸ - Yes sir we have.
and kindly check your navigation
map. Do you have application like
that in your gadgets?
- So what do you think is the use of - Sir maybe if you are lost or going to
that application? some place that you have been
yet¸ more often than that not¸ we
will consult a map navigator.
- Very good¸ however before the
advent of the smartphone¸ people
used maps drawn and scaled in
paper which come in different
forms and sizes but serve as the
purpose.
- What do you think is the other use of - Maps are made for us to easily
maps? locate places. They are useful
- Very good! I would like to reiterate especially when one travels form
the part of your answer which is one place to another.
travels from one place to another.
- So my question is¸ is it possible for us - Yes sir! By using navigation map
to measure the distance of one
place to another place?
- Nice answer. One way to measure
distance of two places is the
navigation map.
- In this topic we will going to explore
distance between two points.
- But before we proceed to our
lesson proper. Kindly group your
selves into 5 then answer the
following questions.

- Provide the required information in

the activity sheet by solving the
missing distances from each theme
park side.
- Do not forget to write your name at - Yes sir!
the back of your activity sheet. That
will serve as your attendance for
today. I will give you 3 minutes to do
that.
- (After three minutes. The students
will going to discuss their output)
- What did you observe in the given - The shapes sir are triangles.
figures?
- Very good! What kind of triangles - Sir right triangles.
are there in the figure?
- What process did you use again in - We have use the Pythagorean
completing the information? Theorem sir.
- Precisely! What is the formula of the
Pythagorean Theorem? - Sir square of the length of the
hypotenuse is equal to the squares
of the lengths of the other two
sides.
- Very good! But aside from the
Pythagorean Theorem¸ we could - What formula is that sir?
also use another formula to solve for
the distances between the rides of
the previous activity.
- That formula is the distance formula.
This formula is used to find the
distance between two distinct
points on the Cartesian plane.
- The following shows how it is derived
from the Pythagorean Theorem.
- Consider the points A¸ B¸ and C - Sir can we manipulate also the
whose coordinates are formula?
(𝑋1 ¸𝑌1 ) ¸ (𝑋2 ¸𝑌2 ) ¸ (𝑋2 ¸𝑌1 ) respectively.
These three points are vertices of a
right triangle where ̅̅̅̅ 𝐴𝐶 and ̅̅̅̅
𝐵𝐶 are
the legs and 𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ is the hypotenuse.

- Since the distance between the

points A and B represents the
lengths of the hypotenuse of right
triangle ABC¸ we can use the
Pythagorean Theorem. That is,
(𝐴𝐵)2 = (𝐴𝐶)2 + (𝐵𝐶)2 . Substitute
the length of each segment to the
formula.

- Did you follow the process?

- Yes sir!
- Very good! So let us present
examples for you to know more
vivid the application of said two
formulas.
- Example number 1. Find the length
of the hypotenuse of the right
triangle in the figure below.

- Any volunteer to solve. Yes - Sir I will try.

Reynaldo.
Given: a=5 and b= 12
Formula: 𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2
Solution:
𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2
𝑐 2 = 52 + 122
𝑐 2 = 25+ 144
𝑐 2 = 169
𝑐 = √169
𝑐 = 13

- Is the answer of Reynaldo correct? - Yes sir!

- Thanks Reynaldo.
- How about if the value of c in the - Sir we can derive formulas also for
example number 1 is 8 and the a and b.
value of a is 6 then what will be the
value of b?
- Kindly do it in the board Alexa. - Sir If we are solving for a¸ we can
use this formula: 𝑎2 = 𝑐 2 − 𝑏 2 and if
for b is: 𝑏 2 = 𝑐 2 − 𝑎2
- Very good Alexa! Base on the - Sir me!
formulas derived by Alexa, any
volunteer to solve please.
- Yes Randolf. - I will try sir. So the given are c=18
and a=6¸ the unknown is c. the
formula that I am going to use is
𝑏 2 = 𝑐 2 − 𝑎2
Solution:
𝑏 2 = 82 − 62
𝑏 2 = 64-36
𝑏 2 = 28
𝑏 = √28

- Nice Randolf. I am happy because

you understand all our today’s
topic.
- How about this one. Find the - That is application of distance
distance between the following formula sir.
pairs of points.
a. (−1¸ 3) and (3¸ 6)
b. (10¸ − 3) and (−14¸ 4)

- Yes that is right. Anybody who - Sir can I try?

wants to try to solve the problem
a?
- Yes Vivian - So the given sir are:
𝑥1= −1
𝑥2= 3
𝑦1= 3
𝑦2= 6

Solution:
𝑑 = √(𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2
𝑑 = √(3 − (−1))2 + (6 − 3)2
𝑑 = √(4)2 − (3)2
𝑑 = √16 + 9
𝑑 = √25
𝑑=5
- Is the answer of Vivian correct?
- Yes sir!
- Okay¸ kindly bring out ¼ sheet of
- Yes sir! Are we allowed to use
paper then kindly try to answer
calculator sir?
letter b question.
- Thanks sir.
- Yes you may.

- The teacher will walk around to

check the answer of the students.
- Yes sir!
- Are you done?

- Ok so let us check. What are the

𝑥1= 10
givens?
𝑥2= −14
𝑦1= −3
- With that given¸ what will now be 𝑦2= 4
the distance between the two - Sir the distance between the two
points? points is 25 units.

- Okay very good!

- I am happy because all you got

the correct answer. So tomorrow
we will going to give more
examples and application of the
two formulas.
- Before we end up our discussion. - Yes sir!
Kindly copy first your assignment to
be passed tomorrow.

- Are you done copying? - Yes sir!

- Okay so that’s all for today. Good - Good Bye and thank you sir!
bye!

IV. Assignment:
A. Solve the problem applying the distance formula.

1. Suppose the Bacnotan National High School is mapped on a coordinate grid with
origin being the Municipal Hall. ALJUN Café is located at the point (−3¸ 9) and ANGIE
bookstore is located at( 3¸ 1). If the scale of the grid I 1 unit= 1 km¸ how far is the café
from the bookstore?

B. Find the unknown length of the following right triangles using the Pythagorean
theorem .
