A. Description of the class:
Ss. between ages of 17-18. Boys and girls.
The class takes place on Wednesday from 8.00 a.m. The students are generally enthusiastic.
B. Recent work:
• Speaking: describing, speculating and eliminating;
• To teach and analize new vocabulary (sports and activities - team/individual/outdoor/indoor sports); • To create interest in the topic; • To confirm expectations; • To practice listening for detailed comprehension; • To study relevant issue (words, structures etc.); • To have the students do some vocabulary exercises; • To create discussion; • To assign homework;
D. Contents:
Stage 1: estimated time: 5'
ACTIVITY/ CLASS ORGANISATION: homework checking; warm up activity The teacher will list the objectives and will check the homework. AIDS: English book, whiteboard, notebooks LANGUAGE: All and any POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: The students may have some problems with the pronunciation of some words. The teacher will be prepared to promt if necessary or ask the other ss to correct the possible errors.
Stage 2: estimated time: 5'
CONTEXT: Writing, Speaking; ACTIVITY/ CLASS ORGANISATION: This is an individual work. Ss have to watch some pictures which present some sports and activities. Ss have to write on their notebooks the name of each sport that each image presents. They don't have to say it aloud, just write. After all slides are shown (baseball, basketball, boxing, ice skating, scuba diving, sky diving, squah, tennis, wrestling) ss name themselves to answer. AIDS: video projector, notebooks; LANGUAGE: All and any POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: Some students may have problems when writing some words correctly. The teacher shows them the correctly written words ( names of sports and activities) with the help of the video projector.
Stage 3: estimated time: 10'
CONTEXT: vocabulary exercise - fill in; ACTIVITY/ CLASS ORGANISATION: This is a pair-work activity. The ss are asked to go to handout 1 and to write the activities from the box in the correct column: activities that go with the verb "do", some with "go" and others with "play". The teacher may give the ss some tips like: the activities that go with "go" all end in -ing, and those played with a ball go with "play", apart from two (hockey and badminton). Then ss are asked to name some of these sports and activities that are team sports, individual sports, sports that are played indoors and those that are played outdoors. AIDS: whiteboard, notebooks, handouts. LANGUAGE: All and any POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: none
Stage 4: estimated time: 5'
CONTEXT: vocabulary exercise - matching; ACTIVITY/ CLASS ORGANISATION: This is a pair-work activity. The ss are asked to match some words to their definitions. They have to write the correct letter that corresponds to each definition next to the appropiate word. These are some words that they will find in the listening activity that follows. Ss name themselves to answer. AIDS: whiteboard, handouts LANGUAGE: All and any POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: There may be some problems with some new words. The teacher prompts whenever it is necessary. Stage 5: estimated time: 10' CONTEXT: listening - T/F exercise; ACTIVITY/ CLASS ORGANISATION: This is an invidual-work activity. Ss are asked to read the questions in 30 seconds. They are told to watch the video that presents the story of a paraplegic mum who finds freedom through surfing thanks to one of her son's friends. (Duct Tape Surfing) Ss have to choose T/F answer for each question. Ss name themselves to answer. AIDS: video projector, whiteboard, handouts LANGUAGE: All and any POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: none

CONTEXT: listening for details; ACTIVITY/ CLASS ORGANISATION: The teacher will explain the assignment. Ss are told to listen to three people talking about different activities/sports. Then they have to say which sport each person describes. AIDS: computer, whiteboard, handouts. LANGUAGE: All and any POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: none
Stage 7: estimated time: 10'
CONTEXT: homework, marking ss; ACTIVITY/ CLASS ORGANISATION: The teacher will explain the assignment. Ss are asked if they have a favourite sport and to name it. Then the teacher gives them a list of adjectives that can describe a sport/activity. If they don't know a word the teacher helps ss with its meaning. As a homework ss are asked to write a paragraph of about 10 lines on "My favourite sport/activity". AIDS: video projector, whiteboard, notebooks. LANGUAGE: All and any POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: none
